Just curious; I have a tape measure which has inches on one side and cm's on the other. On the inch side, every 16 inches there are small black triangle marks. I know these are to mark for studs in walls.

On the cm side there are similar marks every 40 cms. Is this supposed to be stud layout marks in a metric system? If so does that mean than in areas where the metric system is used that a sheet of plywood is 120 x 240 cms?

You may have noticed that 40cms is approx 16 ins just a bit less.

16 inch = 40 cm ?? Roughly... 41.2 if I remember correctly...

2.575 cm to an inch right??

Edit: Brian beat me to it...

No clue... Not a carpenter, not by proffesion nore for fun ... I would seem logical to have nice round figures... instead of havin 123 cm actually having 120...

What's plywood? :D

Seriously I cannot say since its many years since I bought any.

Not in this country. Now that we have gone metric we have to use that system and can no longer buy milk by the pint , just 568 millilitres, oh yeah that = 1 pint.

I bought racking for the garage last year, it was in some strange measurements, I discovered why when I unpacked it, it was made in the US and was nice round inches, but could not be advertied that way.:(

We had an item in our paper the other day about an American DIYer who need to drill a hole in a wall but hadn't got a drill, so he got out his gun and tried to shoot one, the bullet richo.. rebounded and killed his wife.

A quick google for multiplex seems to indicate it is 122 cm not 120

But like I said... Not a thing I normaly do....

So was the hole in the wall like he needed? :p

LOL

You know what, it never said.

Brian

If you can find a reprint, the calibre of the gun used, type wall, exact positioning of the parties envolved, etc would be interesting to consider :p

Something else that I was wondering. Yesterday I saw a roadsign that read "Caution - Bridge freezes before road in winter'. Does that mean that the road freezes before the bridge in the spring, summer and fall?

LOL @ Ken

There are many such logical problems out in the world at large

I know in Canada when they went to metric in the 70's the manufacturer's screwed us royally.
Example:
1 pint of milk = 568 ml. - price 50 cents
New measure - 500 ml. - price 50 cents.

Did you have the same problems in the UK?

Maybe they passed the savings on to the cows - ?

There's a difference between being screwed royally and being screwed by the royals, there is a connection but it's not that simple - :p
