Well, Ted Kennedy just died. (JFK's little brother.)
I was wondering what the world (outside of the US, of course) thought of the Kennedys. What kind of reputation did they have in your eyes?

Well, that didn't answer my question at all.
:)
I was asking about how the world felt about the Kennedy family. Not just Ted or if it was disrespectful to speak ill of the dead.

I wondered if they had reputation of being linked to some underworld strongarms and / or they were viewed as champions of human rights or what.

But never mind.
I was merely curious and I definitely, after reading the linked thread don't need to start another thread that would lead to any more dissention.
And if I feel the need to follow up, I'll wander into the proper Political forums.
:)

But thanks, Rich

There's a more balanced view of how people here feel about the Kennedy clan

It may be clouding my judgement, but currently reading a large tome regarding the Kennedy's, invading Cuba, links with the mafia in Castro assasination plots:

Current standing: = George W Bush

ie the truth is irrelevent as long as my family stays in power

Ted, specifically: Chapaquidick (if that is how you spell it)

The truth is almost always irrelevant in everyday affairs.

I recall someone -- a journalist, I think -- saying that when dining with others, the Kennedys were famous for leaving the table early so they wouldn't have to settle the bill.

Living directly north of the shared border between Canada and USA we hear a lot more then people get from media and propaganda mills. In spite of some of the negatives that people can drag up from 1950s and going forward, the Kennedys did more positive things for people in general then they usually are given (or take) credit for... people need to stop looking for the black cloud wrapped around the silver lining.
And perhaps have more humility and humanity then to celebrate someone's death if they can not find honour in their life.

Ted Kennedy, a serial loser always living in the shadow of serial womaniser John F and his toothy brother Bobby.

Ted left the only girl he managed to pull to die in a lake. Managed to pay his way out of trouble and got done only for leaving the scene of an accident. I'll bet that went down well with Mary-Jo's parents.

He stood for office in 1980 and was shunned by the US populace for the above manslaughter. He then took the side of the Republicans in Ireland (assuming he knew where it is) and helped raise funds for the arming of terrorists against the British army. Indirectly causing the death of many British soldiers.

Now the US populace is mourning his death like a son. Isn't it great how Americans are upset about the innocent Libyan set free on compassionate grounds yet treat this loser like a member of their own family has died.

And Americans wonder why people (outside the US) make fun of them and treat them as hypocritical freaks. The biggest laugh UK comedians get these days is when they lay into the Yanks. Don't believe me? Then watch any UK satire programme (Mock the Week, Have I got News for You etc etc)

I am so thankful I'm not American.

I do hope before you pass away Colin that you gain some sort of positive notoriaty. When everyone is lamenting your passing, we will just point them to Access World Forums.
There they can find the real story of your life.

The rate I'm going, hopefully that shouldn't be too long for people to wait. The next heart attack should be the last according to my cardiologist. Just after the last one, whilst waiting for the ambulance to turn up, I had a quick fag and a vodka because you're not allowed to smoke or drink booze in hospital.

Anyway, what was untrue about my comments on Teddy?

Now that raises an interesting (but entirely off topic) subject: How many countries Health funding is declining because the tax raised by us loyal smokers & drinkers declines due to the do-gooders who decide how I should lead my life?

That's actually an excellent point. As they reduce the number of smokers in the UK they continue to increase the revenue on them. Supposedly to help people to stop, but it doesn't, and it isn't, imo, it's because they need to continue to generate the same amount of revenue as before.

What pains me is that it's smokers and drinkers who are currently keeping the NHS afloat and they are talking about turning people away if they are addicted to these substances. Serious drug mis-users, on the other hand, like heroin addicts, get treated like royalty and sent off to detox in order to "help them". Am I missing something here? Which of the two is legal? Heroin or tobacco???

When we were younger we were told by adverts how good smoking was for you. Indeed in the 30s they advertised Lucky Strike as a "good alternative to eating sweeties" for women. I have never seen such adverts for class A drugs...

The word "unture" was not used by me.
I am attempting to point out that your post was hardly balanced.
The man did accomplish some good as well. Why are you ignoring this side of his life and career?

For exactly the same reason we ignore the good things that Von Braun did for America:rolleyes:

Perhaps because there are enough people eulogising him, if the death had been left as a quiet family affair then his critics would either make no comment or be justifiably condemned, but they must have the right to balance the other side if it is aired.

I know that.

What I am pointing out is that the American people are up-in-arms about the realease of the Libyan to go home on compassionate grounds. Yet, according to our BBC news, seem to be treating Teddy like some kind of royalty.

There seems to be something not quite right in the Amercans reactions to both stories.

I suppose next, there will be some American sympathy for that geezer who held that girl kidnap for all those years. Her name is "Jaycee" - is that a real name? Who would christen a child with such a stupid name?

You sure it wasn't to get to Marilyn first for free desserts?;)

Even if somewhat cracked around the edges;)
