Kennedys

I know that.

What I am pointing out is that the American people are up-in-arms about the realease of the Libyan to go home on compassionate grounds. Yet, according to our BBC news, seem to be treating Teddy like some kind of royalty.

There seems to be something not quite right in the Amercans reactions to both stories.

I suppose next, there will be some American sympathy for that geezer who held that girl kidnap for all those years. Her name is "Jaycee" - is that a real name? Who would christen a child with such a stupid name?

Col

The same sort of people who would name their child for a body part, just spelled differently.

I'm suprized you weren't at the airport in Tripoli with a big "BABY KILLER" sign when the terrorist was having his hero's welcome.

Perhaps because there are enough people eulogising him, if the death had been left as a quiet family affair then his critics would either make no comment or be justifiably condemned, but they must have the right to balance the other side if it is aired.

Brian

Interesting.
How much control over what was aired did the family have?
The news media made the decision to treat Kennedy as royalty, not the family.
Of course, the Kennedy family is the closest thing the US has to royalty, but Teddy was the joker, not the king.

You're not suggesting that they disapproved, are you? I think that they probably both relished and encouraged the eulogies.

Brian

BTW please note that I have made no comment on the man, just about the debate as to whether one should or not.
What did mark antony say about ceasar.

I don't get that.

Oh, the past tense of 'spell' is 'spelt'.

I'm suprized you weren't at the airport in Tripoli with a big "BABY KILLER" sign when the terrorist was having his hero's welcome.

I don't get that either.

BTW, surprise is spelt with an 's', not a 'z'.

On looking at your post - apart from not understanding it, and also with the spelling errors, I suppose it was a reasonable attempt at written communication.

That's because we were denied entry to the "land of the free" when VonBraun was given a heros welcome:rolleyes:

If you check your pocket Oxford, you will find an option for the past tense of spell.

Neatly deflected. To have actually done somthing would have required more action than sitting down at your computer.

The point is, they had no more CONTROL over the media than the Jackson family did.
I sometimes long for the days when you had to wait for the morning paper to get your news. There was no ratings driven electronic media to give events blanket coverage 24 hours a day.
Of course then we would have missed the OJ slow speed pursuit and all of the other earth shattering stories CNN seems to thrive on.

I don't think that is true here. I believe here it is spelled. I know, I know.... more fuel for the fire about American bastardization of the English language.

"somthing"?

Please try to use the correct English spelling then maybe your posts would be understandable.

I'm glad you agree. However, I would never use a word that contains "bastard" in your company Tess.:)

I'm sorry to have to interject here but I feel duty bound to protect your honour and spare any more blushes on your part, it's actually bastardisation:D

I wondered about that when I spelled it. :)
I just looked it up though here...

Is this another American spelling issue?
Do we use z where you use s often?
And if so, how do you think these discrepancies happen?

Were all the bad spellers exiled from England and sent out on boats to America?

When and where?

Posts 24 and 26 in this thread.
Try to stay current.

My 2005 Oxford dictionary gives both spelled and spelt as the past tense for "spell"
My Canadian Press style guide also gives both with spelled being the preferred choice.
