I'm moving to Manchester for work but my OH doesn't want to live in the centre of Manchester as she much prefers the countryside. So we're trying to find somewhere that is easily accessible to Manchester but is also not so city like. We've seen a few properties in http://www.bridgfords.co.uk/forsaleoffice/Urmston/409 and would love to know what the areas like and if it would be suitable? If not would love to hear any suggestions people may have? As we're not set on anywhere just yet.

Not knowing Manchester at all really - but Glossop on the edge of the peak district isn't far into Manchester really other than that - I'd go and have a chat with the estate agent. Then when settling on an area / house - then do the Friday night test - ie

Monday 11 am , and Friday night could well make the area seem completely different.

Good luck.

You you try Lymm or Carrington both of which are in Manchester but in the countryside

Lymm is very nice!

You can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight (if it's not too dear).

It's interesting isn't it, I know the wording in the song is "in" the Isle of Wight, but should it really be "on" the Isle of Wight?

But then you would say "I have a flat in London". Or "I live on a boat".

Any thoughts?

I don't know.
To rent a cottage IN the Isle of Wight perhaps it would have to be a subterranian one - like Bilbo Baggins' place.
Yet - you say - I was IN Chicago - not ON Chicago.
I was IN England - not ON England.
On the other hand, we say - I was ON Long Island - not IN Long Island.
Maybe you're just ON islands (or isles) and IN everywhere else.

The IOW would be a rather long commute to Manchester even if the ferries were running on time.

Yes you live IN towns or countries but ON islands.

And you live BY the sea (or park, volcano, crazy lady, etc.)
or
AT the intersection of 5th and E. 79th (I wish)

And you live WITH your partner.

What a varied language English is:)

You can live up the road or down the street or along the avenue or in the close.

Dash it I could have got four posts out of that rubbish. :D
