I am considering moving the user profile info from across the top of the post to the side.

Which do you prefer?

Hi Jon

What do you see as the advantage of moving the profile position?

The main concern I have is visibility of content when using my iPad. I often look at the forum when I'm not at my PC, then answer the points where I can help either from iPad or when next at my PC if I need to test something. If your proposed change impacts favourably the screen layout in terms of content visibility on whataever device I'm using, then I'd say go for it. :)

Whilst you're at it, I'd like a quick search capability for unanswered questons - I look through 'New Posts' and 'Today's Posts' to see what's not answered, but a direct search would be helpful. This should not be constrained by time as I suspect some questions get overlooked in the welter of posts each day.

Cheers, Nick

I've got several reasons why I'm wondering if its favourable for the change.

1. On todays widescreen monitors, the profile information is spread apart, some of it being on the left, the rest on the right. This would keep it more clustered together.

2. It would narrow the width of posts. This could make them easier to read, rather than excessively long lines of text. Think newspaper columns!

3. Newer versions of vbulletin forum software have decided to put them to the left as the default setting. Maybe there is a usability reason?

Hi Jon

All good reasons!

In terms of the width of posts, I agree with your logic for the main text, but for code windows, it may have the reverse effect? Having said that, if I need to read code from any posts, I generally copy it to a VBA module to study it - so perhaps a moot point.

Don't forget the obligations under the DDA (UK and similar acts in other jurisdictions). Maybe why the vbulletin presentation changed?

cheers
Nick

Well, I've made the change. Your thoughts?

Edit: Now that I have made the change, I see an additional benefit. You get to see more content above the fold since the profile info used to take up vertical space. I'm lovin' it! :)

Using my iPad now and it seems OK. Shame about the frame on the right of the screen, though - it takes a lot of my small screen space and I have finger-trouble with it which means I navigate to places I don't want at times. But then that's no change from before.

Hmmm... I am sort of indifferent, but when the code window gets squished into the tighter frame, it will become less readable, rather than more - it will entail more left-right scrolling. FOr the moment the code window has retained its original size, and some of the threads, with posts mixed with and w/o code window are messy.

Why have we got two threads on this , this one and one in AccessWorld News?

Brian

The News forum is to announce changes whereas this one is to discuss before changes are made, as a generalisation.
