I am new to Access I run a security company and we issue our team member their uniforms and tools. I am looking for a database where I can enter each item and the cost of that item. there would then be a window that would pop up give my secretary a choice to issue or received the items from the team members. every week I would print a report letting me know how much inventory i have on hand and what the total value of the inventory i have. if you have or know of anything that could help me i would greatly appreciate that. everything i am finding on Google if for a business that ships and sells inventory.

Thank you,

Sounds like what you are looking for is only part of the system - this sort of thing would usually also include things like inventory purchase, servicing/maintenance, etc

I would look for something designed for businesses that issue out and receive back items such as activity companies (camping, 10 pin bowling, etc).

Also have a good look through the Access sample dbs - there is a lending library example under inventories, also a asset tracking example.

Further to CJ's comments, I'd like to know what other automation/systems you may have in the security company. Seems your proposed database is a small part of things you might support with automation. It's probably a good time to identify WHAT your operational and planning needs are from a company-wide perspective, then see where this intended database fits. Easier to build something from a plan (even a general plan/design) knowing where other pieces and interfaces fit.
As many new businesses often find, I didn't know developing a database to be used by several employees took so much effort -- I'm so occupied by this software/hardware/application, I don't have time to run my business. Once you get your overall requirements together, and have your proposed database in perspective, you may want to look at off-the-shelf, or commercial packages.
Just some thoughts to consider before you jump in!

Good luck with your project.

generally, you have two choices

a) find a commercial solution that offers the facilities you need

b) build it yourself (or have it designed by a third party)

a) will 99.9% of the time be the cheapest solution, but if there is nothing available that meets your requirements, then you need to go with plan b.

You should be able to compromise in most areas, and only go for plan b if you absolutely have to.
