Option Group Update

Have an option group box with four option buttons. Each record details the stage the project is in.
Over the life of the project each option button will be used:
"Need to order"
"Ordered but not received"
"Material Received"
"Material delivered to job site"

The option group is bound to the table field Material. The first time you go into the Option group, it works fine. However, when you go back to the Option Group to update it to the next stage, the bound field Material does not update to the next option button value.

Before the update, I think I have to clear the previous value in the field Material, I just do not know how to do it.

Is the Material field text or number datatype. In other words are you storing option value numbers 1-4 or that text?
If text, is the field length large enough for the text required?

what do you mean by not updating. the field should be changing from 1,2,3 or 4.
it is not adding new record.
