Password Virus Please Help

I download two samples files from following link

after opening them, whenever i open any of my access database file i am being prompted by a logon on dialog with username and password. And i am unable to open any database in access. Even when i create a new database file i prompts me for username and password.

Please anyone have a way around this problem, as i have lost my whole work that i did for last serveral months.

Two things:

1) Can you bypass this with a shift key? Unlikely, but we need to cover all bases.

2) Can you re-join the original workgroup? To do so,

Tools -> Database Utilites -> Workgroup Adminstrator

Click Join ... and browse to the path something like:

Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\System.mdw

and see if this works for you. (Also check if there may be another file there that replaced the original system.mdw)

This has happened to me on a separate pc. the logon is ( or looks like ) a windows logon rather than a database made logon form. whatever is entered, nothing works. administrator, user, password, no password.

if it is the same which i think it is, you cannot right click, open exclusively as there is nothing to open or link to. every single database you try to open prompts you with the same logon box.

i have tried allsorts. the only one thing i have tried is to re-install Access by a complete removal first.

i dont know what the problem is.

I forgot to inform that I am using Access 2007.
Nothing happens pressing shift key at startup. I am unable to join or create a new workgroup, as there is no menu on startup accept the Access Options or Compact and Repair on the upper-left corner menu. The workgroup file "System.mdw" file lies in the default forlder, even when I double click that file Access prompts for a Username and Password.
One or two of the same database files I tried to open at my office on Access 2003 it works fine, but can't open same files on my home pc.

I think if I am able to reset/relink the workgroup file it will solve the problem, or you guys better know, but there is no menu to do that. Any help will be appriciated.

1) If you're a member of that forum, you should be able to report it by clicking on warning signs, like what we have here, on the upper right corner of any posts. Looks like they've disabled it for nonmembers...

2) Looks like the system.mdw is corrupted; make a copy of a good one from your PC or coworker's PC and replace your system.mdw with this one; it should make the login go away for your own databases, but not for that database you tried.

Security 101 is NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER change the system.mdw.

I know you didn't do it but whoever posted that sample did.

I replaced the "system.mdw" file with another one from my work pc, re-started and it worked. Now I am able to open all my databases.

Since I'm constantly downloading other people's stuff, as are many of the AWF VIPs here, I thought I'd take the opportunity of re-reviewing this thread to do a little preventative maintenance and make a backup copy of my system.mdw. I'm just too lazy and don't have enough time to try to recover from somebody's crappy code hi-jacking my system.

I am using 2007 on Vista and there is no system.mdw located anywhere on my system. I noticed that the OP here was also using 2007 but was able to fix his problem by replacing his system.mdw.

Any clues why I have no system.mdw? If it just doesn't come plain jane on 2007, couldn't the OP have just deleted the system.mdw? What am I missing?

I think this is actually a vestige of 2003 because 2007 did away with ULS; merely using it whenever it opens a 2003... Do you have 2003 on your computer?

Also, it may just be in a different location than where 2003 had it?

If it helps, I made a copy straight after install so if you need one and if it would work, you can have a copy.

I did a search of my whole computer...no system.mdw, though. The install is still pretty pristene (sp?), though.

Of course, when I get some CPU time on my other computers, I will back up their system.mdw.

I get a lot of people thinking I'm being sarcastic...it works OK. But I'm usually not witty enough to be sarcastic (I don't think).

I am running Vista Ult. and Office Pro 2007. I have tried to find the system.mdw and cannot. You said "It is in a place you wouldn't think of." Could you please elaborate on that for me and give me the path that you took to find it.

Well, I can't believe it but I found it. I had to go into the regedit and find where it was.
Here is the location: C:\Users\YOUR NAME HERE\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Access
Now this path is on a Vista Ultimate machine running Office Pro 2007.
I got a safe or unaltered file "system.mdw" off of my laptop. I will try to post it if I can figure out how.

I found it, with bugman's help. It's kinda annoying that the search facility did not find it. Yet another reason to hate Vista. Oh, if only they would re-release W2000.
