I would like to know the proper uses of reporting a post.

Specifically, can it be used to ask a thread to be moved to another post.

Say, if there was a double post, and it had been marked so, and someone posted on the duplicate as opposed to posting on the original.

I am not asking this because I am mad or anything like that, just curious about keeping things clean, organized and followable, as well as what is my responsibility in that, when I am the one who has marked something as a duplicate.

A post can be reported if it is

a) offensive, spam or advertising
b) you can use the report to ask a mod to move it to a different category
c)If you post a duplicate(easily done when the site is mot working properly) you can always use the Edit facility to delete the extra copy. if you started the thread you can delete your thread the same way.

Hope this helps

Beware of reporting your own posts for any reason. I did this the other day (there was a thread with no opening post, so I posted in it, then reported my post to bring it to the attention of TPTB.

Next time I tried to log in, I had been banned.

Interestingly, when you're banned, it becomes very difficult to get in touch with the moderators/admins to appeal it - the board software doesn't let you in to look.

If you wish to report a post, click the icon that looks like a red triangle in the upper right corner of the post [not the set of scales].

You will be taken to a message form. Enter the reason for reporting the post then click on Report Post button.

A general note about duplicates:

There's almost never a need to click the Submit again, even if site say there has been an error. In every cases, post always succeed despite of what actually happened since clicking the Submit button. If one is uncertain, it's best to copy the text in the message box and refresh the thread to see if the post has shown rather than submitting it again and deleting afterward.

During the bad times of day (09:00 to about 11:00 GMT) I copy my post to the clipboard just in case I get the dreaded database error or site not found screen.

Sometimes even though I have only posted once I will get a reply saying I need to wait thirty seconds between posts. I think this happens if the acknowledge from the site times out and my browser retransmitts.

If I get distracted and take a while to put together an answer I will often reload the post to see if someone has already done a better answer than mine.

That's pretty similar to what I've observed/done. :)

It's kind of funny when you think about it. Submitting is absolutely reliable. In all my posts on four different vBulletin forums, I can't recall a single time where it didn't actually post. Loading new posts at that bad time, OTOH, is a coffee break.

Oh.... I mean when I mark someone else's post as a duplicate.... Not my own. I know how to report a post, I just don't want to misuse the function.

Thanks for all of your responses though!

if you mark someone's post as a duplicate, get the url of one of the duplicates (browse to it and copy the address), browse back to the other and add a post of your own:
Code:
"duplicate of [url you copied]."

this will (hopefully) stop people from replying to both, and the link will take people to the other post where people can reply.

then report it. in the report, enter the same thing:
Code:
"duplicate of [url you copied]."

if both posts have no replies it doesn't matter which one is reported. of course, try to only report a duplicate that has no replies. mods will check to be sure.

one more thing about reporting: if you do report spam, add a post of your own that says something like, "spam reported."

NOTE: you can save yourself some time by only reporting ONE post by a spammer. take note of the spammer's nickname and if you see another spam-post by the same person you don't have to report it; all posts by the spammer will be taken care of with one report. it will still be helpful to others if you add a post of your own that says, "spam reported," you just don't have to report it again.
