This was very sad news, my heart genuinely sank when I heard this morning. Clicky

He was a hero to me and many millions of people, he particularly inspired scientists and artists alike, his writing encouraged people to open their minds and inspired imagination.

I'll second that, it's a great loss.
I watched 2001 numerous times and still think it's one of the best movies ever made.
Also found the cryogenic suspension thing fascinating.
