Well, the wife and I are going to Greece in June. 2 nights in Nafplio, 2 on Santorini island and 3 in Athens.

Any tips on what to see and where to eat? Or any advice in general?

Enjoy your trip :) but what ever you do don't do any "Plane Spotting".

We have a good movie about a group of British Plane Spotters who got into some serious strife because of their hobby while in Greece.

Eer - loook at the news for Greece (athens)

And if you still want to go you might not even get there or indeed back again depending on what the volcano does next (and your route of course).

I can't decide if you lot remind me more of Job's 3 comforters, or the Daily Mail.

Never been to Greece, so sorry can't help - I have no doubt you will have a great time though.

Spare the Greeks a few Dimes, they could do with it, perhaps then they won't be going cap in hand to the UK and other EU countries... Spongers..

My thanks to those who have replied so far!

Yeah, I'm a little worried about being in Athens and our flight. But this is the only chance this year for us to get away.

But I've read that away from Athens things are pretty normal so I hope that's the case.

So we do business in Greece so we have daily reports from the ground-Athens is a bit hit and miss
most of the trouble is in the city centre near the goverment buildings -
if you have to do athens - see if you can steer away from these locations - there plenty to see and do - so its not going to be the end of the world - there are more armed police around - but don't let this spoil it ..

the islands are a lot calmer - and it is very hot out there - but its meant to be a nice heat - see if you can see a open air concert - these are a must see -(whether it be a greek classical singer or something a bit more European)

the real problems will be in about 6-8 months time .. thats whenthe shit really hit the fan (again it will mainly be the capital) - but be aware that Greece will be a hot spot for sometime -
Spain and Portugal are trying to sort themselves out - but could be prone to a similar problem ...

Keep out of the way of the riots in Athens. Things have got a bit nasty there.

Still, being a Yank, you should be used to gunfights and general disorder.

It keeps us on our toes. We learn at a very young age to catch bullets with our teeth. :D

Here in Oklahoma we still fight off Indians (or, ahem, Native Americans) on our way to school and work as we ride in our covered wagons.

Covered wagons? We at least have dem dere automobiles in Flaida, but you kent pump your own gas. If you try, you are shot on site and your family is sued.

Talk about threads being hijacked, this is extreme. :D

It is always dodgy making recommendations to people as tastes differ.
We found the Greeks exremely friendly and although it is always useful to learn a few words of the local lingo, as one Greek business man said to me when explaining why they were so good at foreign languages "Well whose going to learn Greek", so unlike the French they don't object to you not speaking the lingo.

We found being from Liverpool and talking about football a good opener, but that doesn't help you. ;)

You are probably genned up on all the usual tourist sights and unfortunately are not going to central Greece or more specifically Meteora, the hanging Monastries are sensational

Have good trip.

That seems to be the general consensus. Will definitely be staying clear of the riots as best as we can!

LOL, I was just about to say that as I was going through the newer posts.

To be honest, my wife did most of the planning so the choices of Nafplio, Santorini Island, and Athens are what she wanted to see. Guess we can always go back again later on!
:)

I mostly want to see The Acropolis and eat "real" greek food (not that I would know what that is, but I'd like to find out!).

The wife and I are treating this as out honeymoon since we never did have one after we got married a few years back so we fully intend to enjoy ourselves on this trip!!!
