What percentage of internet users have the Flash applet installed? I am thinking of installing a flash animation on one of my sites but don't know how many people can see it.

A bunch... But I think you can do a script to check and re-direct/etc if needed...

Most internet users do, but you have to consider the bandwidth issues, the larger the animation, the more bandwidth people will use. If they are on dial-up, it may take a while for the animation to load. Also, if this site is used for business use, a lot of companies prevent downloading and installing plugins, such as flash player.

My whole company and the organisation i'm helping (over 5K people)
has FLASH installed on their home, laps etc simply because its
so common! If you do flash, u can optimise its size by ensuring
your graphics are lean and trimmed wel.
