What's up with peanuts? When I was a kid EVERYONE ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. No kids died at school or went into spasms because they touched a friends sandwhich. And I surely don't recall anyone dying from kissing their sweetheart with peanut breath. Now shcools in the U.S. strictly control what kids can bring in their lunches and the cafeterias surely cannot have any peanut or tree nut products. So, what has happened over the past fifty years? Have peanuts become more dangerous or have people become a weaker species?

I don’t claim to know but I remember when I was pregnant with my first child and had really bad cravings for peanut butter on toast. The midwife keep telling me that if I continued to eat it my child would develop a nut allergy, I would have thought it was the other way around. But she doesn’t have one although she hates nuts in any form and did get confused once and told the school she was allergic to them at which point I got a grilling from her teacher for not letting them know!!! :D

The penuts now are genetically modified but something went wrong in the lab so they are toxic to a large portion of the population. The government health watchdogs will deny this is true but it is

Notice how recently lettuce, tomatoes, and other vegetables and fruits supposedly have Salmonella... its the same thing... slowly these experiments with the food supply is going terribly wrong and the scientists dont want to admit it is out of hand

I think it is the other way around. For years doctors told women not to feed their babies specific foods until they reached certain ages. I bet anyone over the age of 45 was not fed rice cereal only until they were 6 months old because to feed them anything else could possibly cause food allergies. Years ago, before the convenience of canned baby food babies were fed from the table from an early age. I remember my Grandma asking me if I was going to put a little butter and salt in the baby food carrots. My other Grandma wanted me to make a "sugar tit" for my kids when they were teething. This consisted of a teaspoon of sugar placed in a cloth and twisted into a nipple shape. You then dipped the nipple in whiskey and gave it to the baby to suck on. I told her I would drink the whiskey and put ora jel on the baby's gums :).

Does anyone over fifty remember anyone getting sick from peanuts as a child? A dentist friends suggests it amy be caused by the extensive immunizations we have given children over the years.

Nah, Schulz's work has always been done in good taste - :p

Yeah. We had one. Oddly enough, her parents were American  Everyone thought it was because Americans always had allergies. Back then, we didn't even know that Asthma was an allergy lol.

I never remember peanuts as a problem. A mate of mine told me the other day that his young kids are not allowed to take peanut butter sandwiches to school.

Rampant nut allergies are a relatively new development (20 years).
The current theroies for their cause are:
Immunization - reaction to the suspension agent, not the virus or bacteria
Pollution - resistance to all allergies is decreased due to the crap we breathe eat and drink
and a variety of other factors. Personally I think its a combination of all of these factors.

A few years back, the US was airlifting emergency supplies to some disaster. One of the foods supplied was peanut butter and biscuits. A reporter asked if there may be problem with peanut allegeries in the effected area. The response, peanut allergies are not a problem in the 3rd world, only the developed world.
Makes you wonder.

Another thing I've heard is that because children are more likely to be fed on formula, or are not breastfed enough, they are far more suspectible to developing various allegries than a child who has been breastfed for long time (e.g. a year). In underdeveloped countries, it is not uncommon for child to continue to breastfeed up to 7 years old as breastmilk provide far more nourishment than if they just ate what they had because mother's body does the hard work of converting it into useful forms for children.

My boss told me that his son brought home a list of 'banned' foods. This included things like strawberries and nuts, just in case any of the other kids were allergic to them.

I was also on a flight from Toronto to Newfoundland where the cabin crew announced that they wouldn't serve the usual peanuts with our drinks as a parent on board had told them their son had an allergy and they couldn't risk anyone eating some then touching anything that might come into contact with something me might eat. They came back on five minutes later and requested that anyone who'd brought anything containing any nuts on board refrained from eating any during the flight, for the same reason.

Next thing you know peanut butter and nuts will be behind the pharmacy counter and you will have to sign an affidavit that you will only eat them in your home alone in a locked room.

However, if would be very frightening to have a child with that severe of an allergy.

I have a friend at work who's son ate some peanuts and broke out in a rash a few hours later.
Oh my God, he's allergic to peanuts. No more nuts, check the labels on all the foods, etc.
She went to a staggering amount of trouble. I told her she should take her son to an allergist as there may be other things he's allergic to. Turns out the child WAS NOT allergic to peanuts. He was allergic to the poison ivy he had been playing in just before he ate the peanuts.

I feel a lot of parents do not let their children eat nuts out of caution. They should really have them tested to be certain.

I was allergic to my dad's belt when I was growing up. I would break out in the cries if it touched my back-side. He didn't want to take any chances and would test it quite often :(

Just for the purposes of testing it? :p

Parents are the problem - expecially Mothers.

Kids today are wrapped in cotton wool - kids can't do or eat anything without it being supervised in case the little dear gets a nasty germ on themselves, then it's a long bath in disinfectant.

Let the kids go out and play and eat dirt and eat whatever - they'll soon build up immunity and won't eat what they dislike. Kids can't go anywhere without it being in a 4x4 battle bus.
