Guys,

Based on my response to a thread in the joke section i'd like to see what peoples opionions are on the greatest Drummers of all time.

For my own, as mentioned;

Tre Cool from Green Day

and

Keith Moon (Deceased) from the WHO

What are yours?

Dave Grohl, undoubtedly the best drummer I have ever seen and he can sing and play guitar to boot.

Phil Collins - he can play piano and act to boot.

Selecting a great drummer in any musical forum is difficult.

If the drummer is good, the band has a good tight sound, but the drumming is virtually unnoticed.

If the drummer is lousy, so is the band.

Ringo Starr was certainly one of the reasons the Beatles has such a good sound. He also had a great stage presense.

Skip Procop (who) was a great drummer who toured for many years with both Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and other big names in the 70's and 80's. They all swore by him when they were at the tops of their careers.

The greatest rock drummers are propably closer to Skip than to Ringo, toiling in relative obsurity on the riser behind the featured performer.

Keith Moon but Nick Mason will always get a mention for Echoes Live at Pompeii.

You've forgotten Carl Palmer, John Bonham and Ginger Baker

I think some may not know them to forget them Rich.

Phil Collins on the other hand is unforgetable, in every way.

My favorite might be Neil Peart from Rush.

The best of anything always get tainted by personal preferences and I'm no different :p

John Bonham - The best technical drummer

Honourable mentions:

Neil Peart - Must admit don't listen to Rush that much but the stuff I've heard he is awesome (and most of his peers seem to think so too).

Iain Paice - One of those not too flashy but excellent drummers.

John Bonham was excellent too. It's hard to pick a "best" in subjective area such as this. There are a lot of good ones. I never saw Ginger Baker play in his prime, but I like a lot of his stuff too.

"V" was an excellent movie as well. Might be time for an encore viewing!

Animal - Probably the hairiest drummer (Tommy Ramone, close second).

Not R+R drummers per se, but I would say Manu Katche being one of the best. He played with numerous stars like Peter Gabriel, Sting, etc. One who I consider a real drummer is Steve Gadd and the one with the best groove I 've ever seen/heard is Tom Brechtlein. But he, it's a matter of taste ;)

Unfortunately, the best drummer I've heard isn't in this category. Cyril Neville is a funk drummer for the Neville Brothers R&B & Funk group.

I'm not up on R&R drummers. In New Orleans, you are more likely to catch the R&B or Funk or Zydeco artists. Their groups get more air play on radio.

I also agree with the comment that with most bands, unless the drummer is somehow the featured artist, you see the "front men" for the band and never see the rest of the group. Which is why, when Big Band styles was hot, you heard a lot about Buddy Rich. He had his own band and was therefore featured in it.

How many of you remember that Karen Carpenter was both singer and drummer when "The Carpenters" cut a record? Her brother Richard was always her keyboard guy. As a drummer she was OK, but very few other artists had her vocal purity. Such a loss. Rest in peace, Karen.

As a drummer in a band, I have paid more attention to drummers than others perhaps.

Not too sure what a "rock and roll" drummer is, but technically Ringo Starr is excellent - check out "A Day in The life" or "Something".

Neil Pert plays brilliantly, check out his part in the Buddy Rich memorial concert.

But, as for the best? It has to be Buddy Rich, pure genius.

Doc, Karen was a goodish drummer, but her voice was pure magic, a sad loss, there will never be another like her.

Col
