Who is going to win it all? How far will your team go? I think it's Germany's year. Spain's style has been taken down by German teams a lot this year. Although I think it was two Spanish teams in the Champion's League Final?

I am not aware of any correlation between the success of club teams and national teams, mainly because key players in clubs are not necessarily of the nationality of the club. Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid in t he champions league final , but two of their key players , Bale and Ronaldo, are respectively Welsh and Portuguese.

Germany always play as a team and perform well in the championships , but I doubt that any Northern European team will perform exceptionally in the heat and humidity of Brazil.

I am puzzled that Spain are taking Torres but not Negredo, who admittedly was not so good in the second half of the season, but Torres?

To be honest I haven't a clue who will win, I will wait till the end of the group stages when I have seen how the teams have gelled and handled the conditions.
Ok ok I'm hickey. :D

What do you call a Englishman with a World Cup Winners Medal?

Grandpa!

In Toronto for many years we have had a secret fan base for England.
The reason is simple. England last won the cup in 1966.
Our beloved Toronto Maple Leafs last won the hockey championship in 1966/67.
Misery loves company.
Enjoy the tournament.

I think the England team will be lucky to get beyond the group stages...

I'm certain it will be a South American team that will win the tournament, of all the past World Cups held in South America, by far the majority of them have been won by a South American team.

Anyone know why this thread is not in the sports forum?

Are we abandoning the various forum sections now? It would be a lot easier if everything was in the 'cooler.

Seems a lot of people are wondering about Torres as well. In a recent friendly he put one 20 yards over the bar from less than 18 yards out!

He is in the wrong sport, he should try out for his local rugby team, or American Football team for our American friends...

The worlds biggest football (soccer) events starts in 1 days time.. excited... very..

Arguably, the world's biggest sporting event involving a single sport.

I'd like the USA to go far, but there's just too many better players from other countries. I'm going to go with Brazil winning in their home country.

When the US does well in these big events it works wonders for the country's soccer "movement". I think the idea is that the sports fans who don't care about soccer begin to care more when their country plays well. The same could be said for a lot of sports I'm sure, but it's good to see the support for soccer in the country rising so quickly. Once the money is there we should be able to recruit better players and coaches!

Is it just me, or does anybody else think that FIFA fixed the first game for Brazil to win?

The Brazilian who scored two goals, should not even have been on the pitch, as he had elbowed a Croatian player in the face before hand, yet got away with it, and then Brazil were awarded a penalty that clearly was not a penalty...

I'm not surprised that the Croatian coach was angry...

Still FIFA had to let Brazil win to try an appease the rioters in some way...

I didn't watch the match, but I did see the the replay of the penalty call. It was an obvious flop. Croatia also had a goal disallowed that, according to the internet, should not have been.

So yes it seems the first match was fixed or the ref was just an absolute idiot. Definitely more likely to be the former.

This is really going to hurt not only the current world cup, but the sport in general. Especially now that everyone hates the home nation. If they manage to win people will go crazy.

Here's to hoping FIFA only wanted to fix the first match.

Obviously for the tournament to be a financial success the home nation must stay in it for as long as possible, however given the poor officials in the Mexico game then it may just be bad refereeing, else somebody sees Mexico as a threat to Brazil for winning the group.
