Racist is a label that was put onto someone near here who opened the door for a pregnant woman who happened to be here on holidays from an overseas country. So what these days is a Racist.
If the Moderators think this subject is too hot to handle then please remove it. I will be disappointed but I would also understand.

That does not sound Racist to me.. If he/she refused to offer any help that might be more of a racial discrimination.. Even if that is the case, there is a very thin line between personal judgement and Racial discrimination..

You are going to have to elaborate. Were you at the airport and opened the door to departures just as she came through immigration?

I was wanting to talk in general terms. It appears as though I have to elaborate a lot more.

This happened a while ago. A guy stood back from the lift doors and signaled to a Lesbian that she should enter the lift first. Lift is Elevator in US speak.

He ended up being charged for Sexual Harassment.

I only used this story because it came to mind and it is true. Many of us are labelled as sexist or racist. I think it has gone too far.

Was the pregnant woman on holiday story not real? Why have you switched it to this story?

Of course sometimes people are accused of being racist sexist, bigoted when they are not. The devil is in the detail.

This thread seems to start as a bit of a scare mongering email circular.

Are you now thinking of the Peter Slipper story? Though the victim was gay but not a lesbian?

What a messed up country!
What's wrong with being polite, I always step back and let others go infront of me.

My introduction in post # 1 could have been written better. I attempted to fix it in post # 4

My objective was to raise the subject of Racism in particular as well as Sexism and Bigotry. I believe that these labels are given out far to easily.

I hope my intent was cleared up for you.

Are they? Certainly on an personal interaction level as you outline - I have extremely rarely - if ever , come across these labels being handed out too easily.

I can open doors for anyone and usher people into lifts without any worries.

Can you not? Is that what you mean?

I will hold the door, offer my seat, etc for another person if they appear in my opinion it would be courteous. If that person wants to misinterpret my actions as something other then my intent, that is their issue for them to handle. If they feel a civil suit is called for, then I will still stand by my beliefs.

Try this one on for size. I will be blunt to establish the basis of my thinking.

Why do you call a certain part of your community "Afro-American". These people call you white trash which apparently is OK. They call themselves niggers. If I call them niggers I am racist. Why?

Ignorance.

No really, they are ignorant, the ones who still use the word for themselves anyway.

There is hardly an issue with racism or sexism in most modern societies today. Homophobic is the new racist. The LGBT community today are fighting the same right interracial couples were fighting 50 years ago. I'm not gay, but if the federal government in my country is going to allow marriage to be a legally recognized title, then it should be applicable to anyone who wants it. Why shouldn't a man married to another man be covered under his insurance if he is away fighting for our country? Why shouldn't he be legally responsible for making health decisions for him if something goes wrong? If they are in love and married, good on them?

And don't give me any of this "Defense of marriage" or "sanctity of marriage" BS. The moment it provides you certain government benefits, they deserve the same rights. Besides, divorce rates are at an all time high. Most marriages that end, end within two years. If they want to be miserable like any other married couple, more power to them.

The 'Bigot' label in Scotland is thrown about like a ball in Scotland, in other words, far too much. To explain why would take a hell of a lot of time.

Indeed, if a country or people choses to base their law on religious beliefs (such as those persons quoting scripture to disallow marriage between same sex, etc) they might want to rethink their stand... for example, keep in mind that this thinking is currently the hard line that the talliban wants to tow in countries they have a larger influence in...

It's not necessarily just a religious belief but a definition of marriage according to ones language, dictionary , etymology or whatever, in the UK a civil partnership conveys all of the legal rights that a marriage does, why aren't the homosexual community happy. Some are of course only extremists aren't.

Yep. I like the line: "If you're against gay marriage, don't get gay married."

Don't push your beliefs on others. Their marriage would have nothing to do with your life, so leave it alone.

Very few states in our country have a "civil partnership" title. They also are not federally recognized, so federal benefits are not applicable. I'm sure if there were a "civil partnership" that was federally recognized that guaranteed the exact same benefits and rights as "married" does, there wouldn't be an issue. We just don't have it.

I have yet to work out if your problem is with foreign pregnant ladies, lesbians, niggers, or the Taliban.

Or all of the above.

It's not necessarily just a religious belief but a definition of marriage according to ones language, dictionary , etymology or whatever,

By its original definition marriage is a permanent union. Consequently I presume you are also against the right to divorce.

Philosophy based on the current meaning of a word is a thin veil over what are simply prejudiced attitudes.

... if the federal government in my country is going to allow marriage to be a legally recognized title, then it should be applicable to anyone who wants it. ...Why shouldn't he be legally responsible for making health decisions for him if something goes wrong?

You might want to check this even for heterosexual marriages in your own jurisdiction. Many people quite reasonably assume their spouse has this right if something happens to them.

However a relative found out the hard way that he actually had no rights to make decisions about his wife's health once she was declared incapable of making her own decisions.

What is required for this in Australia is an Enduring Guardianship agreement even between married couples. Otherwise the State has control of the decisions.

Note this is separate from Enduring Power of Attorney which covers financial decisions.
