American eating challenge

There was a report in the paper yesterday that a fat American ( or normal american) ate a 72oz steak in just over 3 mins. The challenge was performed in Portland Oregon.

A couple of questions:-

A) is this normal in Portland? If only there was someone on the forums who could be honest, and from Portland, a tall order 'tis true.

B) if Americans go out for a steak meal, what size steak is normal? In the UK, it is 8 or 10oz.

C) how much does it cost for an average steak meal?

D) is it possible to actually buy a 72oz steak and chips meal?

1) Restaurants with food challenges are all over the country. It's not normal for someone (anyone) to eat that much.

2) Most places will have steaks ranging from 6oz up to 22/25oz.

3) Prices ranging from $9USD to $30USD for most "normal" steakhouses. The upscale places will run $40USD to $75USD for the same thing.

4) Yes. Though it's not common. The food challenge restaurants will usually offer the meal for free if the person can eat it under a certain time. Otherwise, they have to pay for it. I have yet to go to a restaurant that offered one.

Thank you. Although anything over 10oz seems excessive. On TV it always seems that an American steak is the size of a doormat, especially in Texas.

I cooked steak and chips the other night, the steak was 7oz and was a little too much for me.

The prices seem cheap in USA, plus of course you get free coffee refills.

2) Did it have tits on page 3? What size were they?
3) How much did it cost?
4) Is it possible to buy a quality paper in the UK?
 
Col loves to have a dig at America and Americans , however it is true that their restaurants do have large steaks, in a restaurant in New Orleans I saw a guy with a huge meal but he only ate the steak leaving all of the veg !!

Shaneman took my late wife and me for a meal when we were over there and the restaurant had a free dessert for Any one who could eat a 32 oz steak meal, apparently Shane had managed this but then declined the dessert, it was just for the hell of it, however I should add that he is about 6ft 8 and built like a brick s**t house without any fat, for our meal he settled for a 10oz if I remember correctly. I suspect others do this sort of challenge just to see if they can.

If you look close at my pic you will see a caveman cut 32 0z. that cost me $28.00 10 0r 12 years ago in Slidell, LA. When home in FL a 10 oz at a Mom and Pop dinner cost me $9.90. At a chain steak house the same size cost me $18.00. While the size was the same the taste was worth the extra $8.00. And no I did not eat the 32 oz at one sitting, I took at least half back to the RV. While I and others do eat steak with (french fries) (chips) most sold in the US steak is with baked potatoes, or mashed.

1) as a light hearted page filler - yes.

2) no it didn't have naked ladies on page 3, although it is what we call a "red top" newspaper. In yesterday's paper however, there was a rather fetching photo of Michelle from Coronation Street in a bikini on a beach in tenerieffe.

3) 55p on weekdays, 70p on sat and £1 on Sunday.

4) yes. Although the "serious" papers are much more expensive.

Tony, I sense that you are a bit sniffy about the English press. Tell me, what is your definition of "news".

Brian, I'm just trying to stimulate some conversation and banter on these dead forums.
I am sick of reading the religion and gun threads, they keep repeating the same old things.
I do realise that in America, guns and religion are the same thing, guns are worshipped just as much if not more than Jesus Christ.

The steak in the picture looked awful, how did it taste?

Looking at the menu, surely a Rare (Cool Pink Centre) and Medium Rare (Warm Pink Centre) are just asking for all kinds of food poisoning :eek: :eek:

Meat should be cooked through thouroughly and hot to ensure all germs from the host animal are killed...
 
Col, there is a TV programme, I think on Channel 5 or 4 called Man vs Food whereby an American goes round the country taking on extreme eating challenges, surprisingly he is not in bad shape considering the crap he eats...

Some of the portions just make you sick looking at them...

He must surely complete the challenge and then go and stick his fingers down his throat... i know I would...

When we ordered it, we had no idea it would be so large. I believe her sides were a house salad and green beans. There was a knife, but it wasn't pictured. The steak flavour actually came through quite well.

The taste was pretty good, though a bit salty (lots of sodium in the breading and the gravy).

There is a warning at the bottom of every page where "cooked-to-order" food is served that says "Consuming raw or undercooked food increases the risk of foodborne illness". However, most restaurants that offer Rare and Med-Rare are confident enough in the quality of their sourcing that they are willing to offer it to those who wish to partake.

Personally, I like a Medium steak, and Medium-Well burger (though I should really do well-done with ground beef).

My wife ended up eating far less than half of the steak, and boxed the rest of it (As you can see, she's quite the small lady, at about 152cm). I, on the other hand, am 193cm and weigh just shy of 15 stone (95kg).

Are you now finding that you cant walk past a park without having to have a nibble on the Grass... :D

Or are you finding that you make random Mooing sounds when you least expect it... :D

I thought that was your daughter!!

Generally members of this forum tend to be of the older generation, hence the thought that she was your daughter...

I realized that I never clarified who that was when I posted. My daughter would be the infant who is out of the frame to the left. My wife and I are 25.
