I can't believe someone compare a Steven Seagal's movie to Casablanca.
if this is pointed at me, I'm not a bit surprised Tera. here's yet another instance of not understanding something outside of their area of discipline. Is that correct? correct me if I'm wrong, by all means! Just like many say, I'm wrong a lot of times, right? :)

Steven Seagal's movies require him to portray a tough guy who beats the crap out of people. He and Chuck Norris are of the same mold. Guys who started out being tough guys and fought their way to stardom. But then (try not to laugh, folks) there are guys like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who will never be Academy Award material but who is not afraid to do some roles that are NOT Mr. Tough Guy. He is trying to expand his knowledge of his craft and for that effort, I deeply respect him. Even if he never becomes a "serious" actor (whatever that really means) he is working his trade in a variety of roles as opposed to being a one-trick pony like Seagal or Norris.

Bogart had many different roles that were not always the tough guy. Movies with a lot of CGI can still be entertaining to folks who like a lot of action, but for folks who enjoy the art of acting, CGI effects often stand in the way. It's a matter of likes and dislikes, for which the French might say Chason a son gu (each to his tastes).

I happen to agree that Avatar was a true work of the movie-maker's art in that it was visually stunning. But there are other movies that required far more subtleties in the creation thereof. Nobody would claim it to be a worthy comparator to some of the real 1940's classics, but consider the movie Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. That story required considerable emotional range for the lead roles and those two people can offer the required range.

Consider The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment. I personally think that was Bruce's best acting job EVER, and we got a chance to see the talent in young Mr. Osment as well. Most of the effects there are considered technical rather than CGI, as I recall, so there was nothing to get in the way of the incredible twist at the end of the movie. The subtlety there was mind-boggling so that the end hit with considerable impact.

There is a group of critics who suggest that the CGI effects take the strain off the actors so that they don't have to show emotions quite so well. Which is why I like Scarlett Johansson as an actress. She was nominated for an Academy award for a failed-romance movie produced by Netflix. Didn't win - but give it a good run.

Slightly off topic, but pertains to the Oscars...

I was tasked with escorting a few Italian contractors in a classified area today and they, assuming I would not understand them, spoke freely about what they thought about the Oscar's and who won what.

I never knew the popularity of the Oscar's extended past the continental US...with the exception of Colin E of course who has always been generous with his thoughts on the matter!

though I get your point, but don't forget they're exaggeration the story to create something interesting and make money out of it.
I realize that. If I'm entertained, I don't mind contributing to the income stream in some small way, and if I care to research the accuracy of the story, there's always the internet, which we know never lies.
Don't forget that the rich and famous have already made their money whether or not I go to the theater. It's the local economy that benefits, and a lot of them are youngin's trying to work their way through school.

@vba_php I'm sorry if I offended you. I didn't meant to. I just wanted to say Seagal's movies belong to another level and comparing them to a movie that will remain in the history is not correct.
But after all it's only for me and everyone is entitled to his own opinion.

It's fun watching the trolls troll each other.

Typically, when you are banned for one reason or another, it's not a good idea to post about the reasons behind it repeatedly.

This award show is nothing but a popularity contest run by the very people voting for each other. We don't get a say. It's a waste of time.

Blimey, Colin - you are missing some little gems of films - not Oscars - but there are some really good ones out there Good Will hunting is a good example, as is Finding Forester - solid story great performances and some unsung ones such as Mr Turner one to watch, and some of the more modern ones that may or may not be up everyone's cup of tea would be "Tower Block" a variation of an old 70's classic film Attack the Block - done on a budget but warrants watching.
and Band of Brothers as a series - is a masterpiece of filming -the boy in striped pyjamas/Schindlers list

I haven't really watched the Oscars in years. I am sometimes curious who gets some of the awards, not that it really matters to me. Of course a number of actors have used it to state their political message.

I can't believe someone compare a Steven Seagal's movie to Casablanca.

A while back I was watching Requiem for a Heavyweight starring Anthony Quinn. Watching him acting a defeated boxer, I was thinking Oscar is dead. There was a time when the actors and actresses were awarded for what they did on the stage. Not for what a CG graphic designer created on screen. There was a time when Al pachino was awarded for Scent of a Woman, Dustin Hoffman was awarded for Rain Man. Jack Nicholson for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Meryle Streep for Kramer vs. Kramer.
There was a time we had movies like 12 Angry men, Raging Bull, The Bridges of Madison Country, Unforgiven, E.T., Forrest Gump, Philadelphia.........

Now they're awarding Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, For God's sake somebody tell me what was amazing in his acting.
Today Parasite won 4 Oscars. How humiliating. Where the Oscars is heading?

Several months ago, Keanu Reeves came to Japan for his John Wick movie. The reporters asked him to stand posing like one of the scenes. He refused. He smiled and explained it was a CG scene and he doesn't know how to do it.

After reading through this thread yesterday and this post inparticular, I went home from work and watched The Scent of a Woman, i'd seen it back in the mid nineties when I was a young 20 something, watching it again, reminded me just how amazing it is as a movie, I had Goosebumps with Al Pacino's acting... just incredible, he was a very worthy Oscar Winner..

Col, if you haven't watched this you should, amazing movie and no special effects.. ;)
