The skill in debating is to pitch the conversation at the intellectual level of the other person otherwise they can't understand, we try to get our points across like that.

Obviously in the UK there is a real need to be prepared to defend yourself against people who'd hospitalize you for wearing the wrong color shirt. The real world is no less a dangerous place here, but at least we can legally carry a more effective deterrent.

But this isn't one of the gun control issue threads, and I certainly have no interest in engaging in another manufactured UK/US feud, my only point was to demonstrate your lack of debating skill whatsoever by completely ignoring this point other than to quibble that your shiv was a stilletto type, which is technically still a switchblade, of the side loading variety, rather than admit that you were being a hypocrite.

i cannot stand Tony Blair - but, the guys from the states do not label me as a Tony Blair fan.

Now I don't like Bush and he's an arse, but I would never label all americans as bush lovers.
each society has its fair share of idiots (US/UK/Europe etc)

but to use these people as the benchmark to judge the rest of the country is not objective.

America has its problems and I could harp on about them, but equally the UK has similar problems, its easy to poke holes in soeones shortcoming (America ) but to do it objectively you need to be able to say we alos have this problems or we don't according to what view you are looking at .

America is such a large country that to be honest those in the north are different fromt hose in the South , it would be like treating the Norweigina and comparing them to the Spanish.

you just cannot do it objectively - different climates breed different views on life etc.

However this does not mean that the US can get away scotch free, America has bullied other nations , and has disrespect for their views and legal systems, which has lead to a lot of bad feeling about america.
the view that comes out of the US is that they are the only nation that has a free society - which is complete rubbish, no nation has complete freedom.
nor is america the free-est (neither is the UK) .

but it likes to think it is and really can rub people up the wrong way
