Hello all Access gurus and wizards,
Hope this is the right area to post this...

Just wanted your opinion on a good Access book, possibly complete with training CD. I would like to have something that's pretty comprehensive in terms of topics, from basics to 'advanced'.

My background:

I've taken a couple Access online courses myself, so I'm pretty familiar with the very basics of it (creating tables from scratch, importing excel to table, linking text delimited, basic select queries and very beginning of action query like append query, forms, basic switchboard using wizard).

I've used access personally at work, creating some reports myself from scratch (meaning from linking stage to final report).

The only book I have is Using Access 2000 by Roger Jennings (I think it's by Que publishing). After I bought the book I realized it's more of a reference book for the experts, so I need something more 'down to earth' for somebody my level.

I personally would like to learn more about (or at least familiarize myself) with action queries, macros, perhaps just some basics about commands/VBAs (enough to at least know or benefit more from this great forum), linking datawarehouse, etc.

I came across 'step by step Microsoft Access'..I think it was $19.95, which I might purchase, but I would welcome additional comments/suggestions.

P.S. Bob Larson- I'm in Portland too.

I like the Access xxxx Developer's Handbook (xxxx being the version) by Getz/Litwin/Gilbert, but I would call it more of a reference than a guided training type book.

My wife teaches MS Office products for a major USA computer distributor. She has yet to find a series of books she likes. On the other hand, she has no trouble whatsoever in giving a negative recommendation to the Element K series of books.

Good luck on finding something.

Thanks guys...I think I might get the Access 2003 Bible, since that may be more suitable for me. I'm far from being considered a 'developer'...if I can consider myself a "power user" I will be ok for the time being. I know that this site has tons of tips/tricks questions, but I think many of the people who answer are experts and there are many basic things that may be left out or we're expected to know so...I hope by getting this book, I can understand some of the answers better also.

Bob- I think I may have similar book...bought it for about $39 and didn't learn much from it for what it's worth.

But will keep everybody posted.

I've been using access 2003 bible - and its pretty clear - it does skip around a bit- but most of what you need to know is in their -recommend that yu read it cover to cover and then use it as a reference

Thanks Gary.

I think also in addition to the 2003 bible, I'm gonna get this book too

http://www.informit.com/bookstore/product.asp?isbn=0789731525&rl=1

focusing more on query, reports and forms.

We'll see how far I get with this. I know some of the chapters from both books may overlap but, overall I will be spending around $60 much cheaper than the $155/6 hours that I might be spending on a group training.

We shall see.
