I know this answer but I would like to hear it from an expert. My question is several of our computers are currently running XP with Microsoft Office 2007. MS Office didn't come with Access our IT department wants to add Access 2000 instead of purchasing the 2007 Access. Is there a compatability issue between the two versions?

I'm not sure what you are asking-

Are you saying that both Access 2000 and 2007 will be installed together? Or that you want to use file created in 2007 in 2000?

If they are to be installed side by side, it will work but you'll get an annoying "Please wait while Windows configure Office..." every time you switch between 2007 and 2000 version.

If you already have database created in 2000, and want to use 2007, no problem. It's totally compatible.

But if it's created in 2007, it depends. If you used .accdb file format, then no. But if you used .mdb file format in 2000 version, then it should be able to be opened by the 2000.

Did that help?

I think what I am looking for is that we have MS Office 2007 installed on a computer. It did not come with Access 2007. Our IT guru wants to install Access 2000 on the computer. Since we are possibly having Access 2000 install on a Microsoft Office 2007 isn't there some kind of compatability issue with MS Office itself.

If I am not mistaken MS Office 2007 is not compatible with MS 2000 and mixing the two could cause issues in the newer version of 2007

Since you didn't have Access 2007, installing Access 2000 shouldn't cause a problem.

the issue is that successive verisons of a product include additional functionality

so A2003 will open a A2000 database, but A2003 will not open a A2007 database

As you dont have any other database, you will not have a problem - but in any event multiple versions of access will coexist on the same system.

Having said all this, note
1) it will be awkward obtaining A2000 in the future
2) if you have MS office, you only need an Access UPGRADE, which is only about £80 for A2007
