Quite interesting. I was taught that faggots are basically slow burning fuse (used in early firearms to light the powder of a gun or cannon). Always curious how the language gets new definitions.
In the UK, that is the most common use by far. While it may well have gone out of fashion since my youth, asking for a cigarette with the phase "Can I bum a fag?" used to be VERY common.
If I recall correctly, Richard Burton's character (a shot-down RAF pilot) in the WWII movie "The Longest Day" said he'd been dying for a faggot all day. From the context, he meant "cigarette" - but I must say his comment forced me to take notice.
