Coronavirus - are we all doomed? (2 Viewers)

Never mind, I was trying to use logic. I forgot the futility of using logic in a situation like this. I'll bow out, as I don't know any other way of discussing issues.
i'm not following, so I'll give up too. I don't think any of us really know what we're talking about....

Corona virus is living proof (well... OK, viruses aren't technically alive) of evolution in action. Anyone who doubts evolution should read headlines about how this is a new strain of a virus that mutates in various ways.

You bring up a good point Doc. I was told by a genetics student many years ago that virus only have 3 out of the 5 characteristics that define something as being alive, such as reproduction, produce waste etc. So indeed, there is debate on whether or not viruses are "alive" or whether they are just bits of genetic material floating around doing their destructive thing.

Just to be a spoiler. Getting into the weeds over what is alive and is not; take a look at prions. They are even less of a life form than viruses. Argue on!

very nice, AB. here's a conv. between my girlfriend and I today via text message:
ADAM => tomorrow is Friday the 13th. scary scary!

GF => oh ikr? I have a hair appointment tomorrow morning. Maybe I won't go.

ADAM => what are you afraid of? A band hair day? LOL

GF => Well for 1. It's Friday the 13th. 2. The Corona. 3. The corona

ADAM => First of all are you talking about the movie old version or new version? Second of all are you talking about the beer, the virus, or the corona of the Sun?
So what do you think you guys? am I a smartass or what? :p

Stupid publicity stunt??????

One of the TV programs I watch has three anchors. They announced that they will be in three separate studios to minimize their exposure to the virus.
I don't know how many people were involved in peopling (modern day language) the equipment in the studio to support the anchors when they were in one studio, but it seems that placing the anchors into three separate studios would actually result in the need for greater support staff. Net result; more people interacting, resulting in a greater potential of being exposed to the virus.

Adam: Thank you for the first of your two posts in #93. It is a constructive statement.

I recognize that there is a touch of whimsy in the second post and actually can see the humor in it. There IS something to be said for beer having a negative effect on viruses (see my comments below) but sadly, beer has too low a percentage of alcohol to be effective against corona. You would have to bathe in beer for it to be effective and I don't think I want to smell like beer. I had enough of that smell when I was a musician on Bourbon Street in New Orleans many years ago.

Steve R. - there are important reasons to be aware that corona virus isn't technically alive.

1. Antibiotics won't stop it. They MIGHT stop secondary bacterial infections (a.k.a. "opportunistic infections"), but virals only respond to anti-virals and none have yet been designated as effective on corona.

2. Antibacterial soap won't destroy it. Hand sanitizers WILL - but not because of the antibacterial agent. They will destroy it because of the alcohol usually found in such concoctions. Alcohol "denatures" the viral proteins by forming enantiomers with "included water" and that will deactivate them.

3. One treatment that works for bacteria will ALSO work for corona - ordinary soap and water. Antibacterial soap works too - but no better than ordinary soap and water. The key is to wash well enough to "float and dislodge" viral elements from the surface of your skin, because viruses can hide in skin oils for a while. But ordinary soap and water removes oils - and the viruses hidden therein.

Well I just got a heads up that our agency will be going remote starting on monday. Will get details later today. Its a major relief for me as our area is getting hit hard and information is hard to come by. Keep hearing "if you come into contact with an infected person ..." but how does one know as they dont release any info on who or where someone infected is.
I walked into an apartment building the other day and could hear someone coughing up a lung and I must admit it was a little terrifying.

Well, I've developed a mild cough, but as my wife and her mother and father have all had a flu-like bug in the last 3 weeks I'm not overly surprised.
They didn't test the wife 2 weeks ago at the doctors, as she had no obvious method of contracting it at that point (having already had the flu symptoms for a week at that point).

So possible consequences are;

a) I've already got it!
b) I'm not really in a high-risk category, so would they waste a test on me?
c) It would stop me visiting my mum. Who is in her 80's, but I've been keeping my distance when I have seen her, as I didn't want her catching my "cold".

:coffee:🍪:coffee:

the flu and corona are 2 different things, minty. one is extremely hot and is about 1 AU away from us, and the other is born due to a flaw in human beings. =)

take a look at prions
Apparently there is some flesh wasting disease with deer that are affected by prions. And they can live on surfaces for years! There has been much talk of deer hunting and eating infected deer. Then you have the prions inside of you.

there you go thinking again, Jon. you're paranoid.

Another one of Adam's stellar comments...

If you have a 401k of 403b or any investments please send your thanks to the democrat party and Mr Maher.

Bill Maher said Friday that he is "hoping" for the bottom to fall out of the economy and for the country to enter a recession so we can "get rid of Trump." He said one way to do that is a "crashing economy." Maher said he is "sorry" if it hurts people, but rooting for a recession is a prevention measure to losing democracy

But I can see he's made a stellar improvement

There are supernovas and main sequence stars, and then over there in the corner are proto-stars - star wannabe types - including a brown dwarf that isn't as hot or bright as it wants to be.

Luckily I have no idea about his comments as he's no longer visible to me. But I can see he's made a stellar improvement  :p
Wow people have actually blocked me? I didn't think that would come to pass. But that's no surprise to me like I care anyway

didn't it make you laugh, richard?

In a word.... NO. It did, however, make me shake my head a bit.

On another topic, Adam, you just gave a new member some advice. Her question was about relationships. You told her she needed to learn how to use Google. You don't seem to get it. That wasn't productive at all.

If you can't give more specific advice - at least better than "how to Google" - don't get involved. When I saw what you did, I had to step in and try to give Elena something she COULD look up. Her problem clearly was not knowing keywords to search, not a problem of how to search at all. How do you think she got here in the first place EXCEPT by searching?
