Excel 2007 issue

I have a user who has office 2003. He gets emailed office 2007 documents frequently, he does have the conversion tool installed, however, from his email when he clicks to open the file it makes him unzip and save the file before he can open them. i have looked and looked and cannot find out why it makes him do this.

What happens if the xlsx file is not zipped?

none of the excel files are zipped, its just a file but when the user goes to open it it asked to unzip even though its not a zip file makes him save the file and then he can open it fine.
