dont' be too sure bob. there are many more people in this country that want to listen to a demigod than those that actually want to see work get done. Obama is a great demigod, but when it comes to common sense, I think he's pretty low on the pole. Let us not forget that common sense doesn't get the votes from the majority. he's not out to please the rich and knowledgeable...

He's got far more common sense than Bush. Anyone who would have followed Bush after what he did to this country would be in the same position Obama's in. It's going to take far more than one term to fix everything Bush screwed up. Most people don't seem to be aware of that and expect everything to be an immediate turn-around. It doesn't work that way.

i'll add one more comment to this vassago. lest not forget just bush. what about carter? hoover? reagan? clinton? they all screwed it up too. lets blame it one them all. after all, aren't they all crooked? i sure hope so, otherwise their names would all be Jesus.

That is true, but he was hyped to be the "saviour" of the nation and it is turning out much worse than people had expected. His handling of many things (including not reigning in Reid and Pelosi) is going to hurt him big time. Of course it wouldn't be a one term operation, but frankly I think there is enough people disillusioned by many of his actions (which had nothing to do with fixing things) that he will be a Jimmy Carter (one term guy). It is just the way it is going. Of course he has a couple of years to turn it around, but he'd better start doing something good or else it is not going to be good for him. It already is not likely going to be good for Democrats in November.
Change for the good of the country is one thing but many things have been change for the sake of change (regardless of what the people want). And much of the change has been happening in more of a forced manner than trying to elminate the bi-partisianship that the Big O has promised to work to eliminate. He screwed that over right away and it won't happen now at all because of the tactics used to get the big, costly, and stupid healthcare bill passed. He just wanted a healthcare bill passed, regardless of whether it was a good one. They didn't get a good one and in fact pissed a whole lot of their own folk off in the process. There may be time for that issue to die down before the presidential election but it is definitely a sore spot for many.

I don't personally see how the health care bill is a bad thing. In the long run, it'll create more jobs for people and get people the health care they need. The only thing I disagree with on the health care bill is the forced health care.
I haven't agreed with everything he has done either. But I do see how most of the things he has done will help in the long run.
Personally, with all of the bickering between party lines and more highly respected politicians going independent and actually thinking for themselves instead of going with their respective "flocks" of politicians, I can see more independent politicians in office in the near future. People are tired of hearing about the lack of a bipartisan government.
You also have to understand that it's not always about what the majority of people want. People don't seem to understand that sometimes the majority of what people want is not was is good for the country, especially if it denies a minority of people basic rights. It's the government's job to make sure that doesn't happen, even if the majority of people don't agree with it.

Don't know the Ins and Outs of US politics but one point for Clinton is he left a budget surplus - I think??

At the end of the day, what ever is done must be paid for, or it used to be this way.
The people of a country used to be referred to as Citizens now they are more commonly known as Tax Payers and the relevance increases each year.
Handouts, Bailouts... Help people who need help but give work to people who need work, not Money.
In NZ, during the Great Depression of the 30's, the Govt sent a lot of unemployed people into the windswept hills and sand dunes to plant trees.
By the 1970's NZ had a large Forest industry and still does thanks to the large State Forests (plantation) that are tendered out for cutting and replanting.
None of this happens when Dole Money is handed out.
Back to the Gulf Oil issue, No public funds should be used to clear up a commercial problem.
The Drillers should be forced to have Insurance Bonds to cover such an event if there is a possibility of Bankruptcy to avoid the cost of a cleanup.
If something like Insurance doesn't happen then the companies can Lease the rig out and the liability, to a smaller company that will be bankrupted after what they see as undue costs being incurred. (Any cost that can be avoided, to some is Undue)

The only people that hyped it to be so were the Republicans. I don't ever recall reading in the news that Obama said he was the Savior, or "The One", or any other such nonsense. The Republicans and Fox News tried to make it appear that was his position. I can only imagine they did so because pride is looked at as a fault, and so they tried to make him appear arrogant and prideful.
True, but I'm not sure it is going to be as lopsided as reported. Also, anyone who follows politics knows that generally the president's party loses seats in the midterm.
But that's the key, isn't it? Some changes ARE good, even if "the people" don't want them. An important saying to remember: "What is right is not always popular, and what is popular, is not always right." Don't Ask Don't Tell comes to mind here.
In general, I think the healthcare bill is a good idea. However, I will agree with you that some of the tactics used (particularly the Nebraska idea) were very poorly thought out.
It's really amazing how different a person can appear to various people. I've never considered President Obama to be some kind of savior, or that he was special, or that he had all the answers, but then again I don't think any president has ever fit that bill.
