The new pope has been chosen. Cardinal Robert Prevost, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA and who served the ministry in Peru, has taken the name Leo XIV. Supposedly, he has some experience with financial issues. Given the problems of lawsuits filed against pedophilic priests, the church IS in a monetary crisis. As you know, I am NOT Catholic, but in respect for my Catholic friends here, I thought I might bring up the topic as a place to start a discussions.

The question with the many various religions has ALWAYS been just how inclusive they are. Islam? Not very inclusive at all. Universalist Unitarian? A lot more inclusive. Other religions? Somewhere in the middle. Atheists? We take ANYBODY!

According to Catholic doctrine, the Pope is infallible so it must be a sin to disagree with him. Let us pray that we didn't end up with another communist church leader who will drive more people away from the church.

I didn't know this right away, but it turns out the new pope's maternal grandmother is from New Orleans, in the area we call the Seventh Ward, which is about 6-8 miles away from where I live. It is a neighborhood of mixed families - including mixed ethnicity and heritage. Given his ancestry that includes Haitian great-grands, the new pope is automatically a DEI person.

I found it interesting they were from a JAIL, not a prison - I'm assuming their sentences were commensurately not super long, maybe a DUI here, an assault there - and <1 yr sentences, an interesting context to decide to perform an escape, I think. Lifers in prison I can obviously understand, but

They hold people pre-trial in jails, not prisons, so their charges could be anything, even murder.
