OK folks...I'd like to know how much self recognition is too much? How long do I talk about myself in front of another person before they think I'm conceited? I'm finding it a bit difficult to realize who the real friends are in this world anymore. Anyone else get that too?

I've just run into too many people that apparently have hidden agendas on their minds. That's a great way to corrupt our youth

Normally, a person who talks alot about themselves has some insecurity issues. I read that in a book once. Can't remember the name of it as it has been so long ago.

I think it depends. I tend to talk about myself a lot, or blurt and interrupt into friends talking as I can't hold my tongue. I think, as Bob said, it can be a sign of insecurity. But, if you hold your tongue, don't interrupt people but wait for the right opportunity to share your story, or what's on your mind, etc, I think it's perfectly acceptable. Also, if you find that you don't really listen to others as they are talking, but are only thinking about what you want to say next, or everything someone says is an invitation to turn conversation around to your own experience, it could be a problem. I struggle with this problem very much..... But am taking steps to change the habits.

It's perfectly fine to talk about yourself as long as you use the right tone, word choice, and body language. You don't want to come across as concieted or bragging. One sure-fire way to pull it off right is to observe how comedians do it. They do it in such a way that it captivates the audience, yet the audience knows he/she is telling the story for interest, not for vain.

ummmm....that would be EVERYONE at this point in time Bob. I'm gathering that we're starting to talk more about ourselves because our jobs are becomming less and less secure as time goes on.

as a follow up to this, I just read an article that predicts gen Y workers to have approx 15-20 jobs before they retire. I'm sure this is bloated for dramatic effect, but it's not far off I'm sure. :(

I didn't say insecure about our jobs. It is internal insecurities with your person (low self-esteem). You can tell someone does not have high self-esteem if they constantly ramble at you (not necessarily talking about themselves though). Likewise, if you find someone who asks you a lot of questions about YOU then they likely have a high self-esteem.

I don't think that's such a bad thing. More and more oppurtunities for advancement open up as you become more skilled and with the invention of the internet, it allows us to keep in contact with former fellow employees and supervisors that may have moved on to other companies. This allows us to branch out and network. Promotions seems to happen more often company to company rather than internally in today's technological society.

Besides, everyone gets burned out of the company they work for eventually. It's nice to increase your skillset by working for a new company who might do things differently.

I haven't been able to see how some people can stay for so long in one place. I haven't been able to. The longest I've been in one place has been 4 years at two different places.

I have, and continue to suffer from, severe low-self esteem (that's not new to me). And that is no joke. :(
Aww... you need to get out more, socialise more and interact more with people. Get away from the screen more than you would normally do. Have you tried Counselling to help boost your self-esteem? Or workshops? Actually, that might be a personal question. You don't have to answer.
