Are you suggesting that the US government was using the IRA as a proxy to wage war on the UK?![]()

Ksan said:I fully subscribe to the view that America is changing for the worse and unfortunately it's influence is so great, it affects great swathes of the westernized world too, the UK in particular. The freedoms we have known in the past are disappearing wholesale and we are being herded into a society where we will cease to question because we are being co-erced into believing everything is for our own protection.
It is probably going to be offensive to state this, but despite the carnage and inhumanity of modern terrorism, our governments have benefitted immensely from the changes it has allowed them to effect. The war on terror is a blank cheque to erode civil liberties at home and to progress the westernisation of the entire world. Quite why we are to be restricted and hampered, is the real question - terrorists have always existed, but our reaction to them has never been so extreme before.
Why are we being herded into a state of paralysing fear about the situation? Because fearful people look to their leaders and are grateful for their guidance... This gives politicians more power to easily control their populations - the question is 'why?', to what end do they need us pliable and unquestioning?
We all have a right to free speech, I sought to imply that God does not even come into it.
The_Doc_Man said:Terri, the government lost that case, has to give back the guns, and has new, much stiffer rules for confiscating weapons in times of emergency. Like, don't threaten the cops, but if you have a gun in your house and the cops know it, they must not take it unless your gun was illegal in non-emergency times. (Like, a felon owning a handgun, or an illegally owned fully automatic weapon without a special license for same.)

Not all things USA - both Rich and I have expressed acknowlegement that Elvis Presley is the No 1 in rock n roll.The_Doc_Man said:Rich, I've given up trying to enlighten you. Why? Because your mind is closed and forever poisoned against all things USA.
I do not "fire right back", I merely try to assertain what is happening. The visions we get of America are continually shot down (by Americans) as "pure Hollywood" or untrue.Kraj said:Colin is a completely different story. I'm pretty sure he just feels constantly bombarded by crap that originates in the U.S., especially since Blair is basically an amplifier/repeater for it. Therefore, it helps him feel better to fire right back.

Fine...I'll take it. It's called E-N-T-E-R-T-A-I-N-M-E-N-T, not real-lifeColinEssex said:What all you Americans here have failed to respond to and always will I suppose, is that if Hollywood and US TV stereotypically has a negro as a pimp or drugs baron (for example) why do they do it if it's blatently not true? (as you all seem to think)
Once again, you're watching entertainment...the producers aren't going to show you Poor Aunt Olive that got pulled over for having a cracked tail light, or Grandma Rosie that was going 10 under the speed limit with her left blinker on. Those are boring so they'll show you the stops with the "danger factor". After chasing someone down, the police already know they're going to be a handfull, so the guns are out...you can rest assured that Aunt Olive and Grandma didn't get the same treatmentColinEssex said:I was watching a US police programme at the weekend (the one with the camera in the police car) and in the majority of instances (except one) - a policeman got out of the patrol car after stopping a motorist, and pulled his gun before approaching the car. Yet on this forum, Americans say that apparently it doesn't happenHow can it not happen when we see real police footage?
