Pinewood Derby Db

I've volunteered to look into building a database to house data for a boy scout pinewood derby event. I'm looking forward to the challenge, but the one thing that'll be completely new to me is trying to interface with some kind of timer coming off the track. Does anyone know how or what can interface with Access VBA for this? Thanks in advance.

PS. I'm willing to go to visual studio for this, using VB.net if I have to. But I have very little experience in that arena.

Sounds a bit specific.
If it's anything like a barcode scanner you plug it in and it 'keys' text to whatever has focus. It just acts like an automated keyboard. If that's the case what dev environment you use to capture the data makes no difference. But I personally have absolutely no experience with such hardware so can't say for sure.
