When I first landed on the site it was as if I was in an altered State. It was Access World forumish...same look and feel, familiar names...but not quite. Odd.

Why have you chosen to misquote me?

I never said anything that slightly resembles your claim. In fact I made a generalised statement that showing one's location was a good idea. I never excluded Americans as you claim.

Did I do something to defame you in this or some other post?

The point I attempted to raise was that where an American lives is redundant. No one cares where they live. I attempted to explain this in my Presidential analogy.

I would suspect that vassago did not read my entire posts. If he did he should have understood what I was saying.

So at the risk of beating this to death with boredom I shall attempt to explain yet again.

A bit vague and in hindsight perhaps I should have opened with something like “To take the subject further a field”. I failed to do that.
But the point is still valid. At least it is to me based upon American Movies and TV News shows.
Americans are often asked where are they from, to which the answer is ignored.
It is a bit like asking “How are you today”. No one really cares; it is simply considered the thing to do.
The final point raised is that Americans in General think that I should know that CA, LO, and AB are American States and where they are geographically. I only found out at an Access conference recently that Washington DC and Washington State are on different sides of the Country.

What can I say? I really thought you were having a go at me, but alas you appear to be genuine.
I did state in this post that I did use “a little licence to alter the discussion” I made a genuine attempt to correct/clarify what I said in Post 16.
I still believe that as far as Americans are concerned, that where they live is only important to them. No matter how proud they may be of their home town it is of little consequence to others. And where I say others I am referring to their own countrymen.
To me, I believe that asking an American where he is from is more from culture and politeness rather than a genuine interest as to where they live.

Finally I wish to say something about the location that we can see in the top right corner of each post.

I find it most useful when dealing with different cultures. It is good to know that a person’s first language is not English. It can also be helpful with Dates, Units of measure and other similar things.

Knowing that a person is from the USA or England is sufficient to me. Time is not so important as I can always see in my local time when a person posts.

It is not uncommon for me to post at 2:30 in the morning. So know my locale is of little help to you.

For anyone who read this post I trust I have explained myself clearly. And if I offended anyone, apologies.

This is a perfectly simple thread, theres no criticism of the user of Dallas Texas format to need the "God Forbid" in your statement. Nor has it any real connection to Colin - unless you desprately want to drag him in.


Yes someone must be bored and more - to want reply multiple times to an innocuous little thread in such a spoiling way.

In the example you provided (the president asking troops), you're probably right. It's just a way of connecting with others. And TV and movies are not good examples of how this kind of thing works.

I travel for work at times, and I can tell you that when I ask someone where they are from, I actually do care. If someone's from California, its more likely (though not guaranteed) that they are liberal, progressive, etc. If someone says they are from Georgia or Mississippi, they're most likely to be conservative, old-school, etc.

So if I ask someone where they are from, and they say California, I'd be more willing to ask them about certain topics. If they say they are from Georgia or Mississippi, I'd probably nod politely and back way slowly ;).

I don't think they're assuming that you know, they're just using common methods of displaying state. If you really wanted to know, it would be very easy for you to find out.

And there is a Dallas Georgia...

I think the response could depend on other things as well. I can see a person in an airport just saying Dallas and most anyone would assume Texas. But if the person is proud of being from Texas they could add that on as a matter of pride or even habit...

Why would anyone claim to be from a place with 'Liver' in the name :(

Before your ignorance gets you into trouble I suggest that you research the origins of the name Liverpool, the clue is in the last 4 letters.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who misunderstood your original post, as indicated by Brian's response.

My ignorance is all I have that is truly mine :)

Saying you're from Liverpool is like saying you're from cat gut creek... I don't like liver or cat guts :)
 
The point is that the Liver in Liverpool has nothing to do with the organ and nobody seems to know when that spelling was adopted, various spellings are suggested for the original name but all seem to agree that it meant muddy water.

As to the missus well you were missing for a while so probably did not see my thread in the watercooler as to why I am on inconsistently, normally as now on an IPad , my desktop is noisy and is in the room next to where she is sleeping.

She is very ill now the stomach cancer is winning and it is only a matter of time, her breathing is difficult and today she has been provided with an oxygen making machine, our NHS is brilliant, as are the nurses who come each day.

Sorry to hear that Brian. I'm at a loss for words except I pray for a minimum of pain or suffering for her and strength for you.
