I am working in Access 2007.

I have a db that is in production but is a work in progress as new users come on board. This past weekend I just updated the db with more changes. I noticed that the db that is in production was close to 12 mg while the updated one is only about 8 mg. I added a couple of forms and a couple of reports to the updated one so would suspect it would be at least slightly larger; not smaller. I didn't do any compacting of it or deleted any thing. Does anybody have an explanation of why there is this great size discrepency? Is it something I should be concerned about?

TIA,

It has always been my experience that a database grows when in use. Action queries will cause it to grow even faster if you have too many. I would not be concerned unless it grow by 12 meg everyday it is in use...

That makes sense. Thanks for replying!

In your title it says FE I assume you men Front end so the database is split is it just the FE that has decreased in size or the overall database size? also have you enabled "compact on exit" this may explain some of it or you may have linked images rather than have them contained withtin the database tis the only thing I can think of atm.

As GinaWhipp says databases usual increase in size due to extra data, certain actions etc both back and front ends I have had FE's bloat in the past but is usually something simple.

Hi John,

Yes, it's just the front-end that was larger before than after. I don't do anything with images and I don't "compact on exit". I assumed that GinaWhipp meant that the FE can increase in size due to queries and such. I'll keep an eye on it and see if I notice any growth as days go by.

Thanks for responding,

Rena as the others have indicated

Prior to splitting a database the data is held in the same file as all the coding relating to the forms and the queries.

After splitting this is separated so a front end split database should always be smaller than a combined front and back end.

Thank you, Lightwave. Yes, I understand that. This was a split database that I was updating with a split database :D.
