Are standards slipping?

Col, I kind of agree with you.

I was once abused by a lady for opening the car door for her.

Thats the perils of curb crawling I suppose.

lady?

From the rest of the story - seemed like she got in - and you found out she wasnt a lady?
When you knew this - you got out before she did, but only after she had abused you?

Is that your story - and your sticking with it? ;-)

Brian, I am not saying one should wear a tie etc all the time - I know I don't. My point was having evening dinner in a four star hotel, it would be nice if people made a little effort to look smart.

You are right, I have never been "oop north", as I said, primarily because of the negative comments on tv and in the press, it's not worth the risk.

I know women are independent these days and want equality (when it suits them) but in my experience good manners and gentlemanly behaviour towards them is in most cases well received.

If good manners disappear, where does that leave society? We could end up being like Australians where men are men and so are the women.

Is it better to see well mannered behaviour from someone dressed smartly, or a swearing, spitting yob? Obviously the doubters here prefer the 2nd option. Good luck I say, try and get a decent job wearing jeans, t shirt and trainers.

I'm not sure what negative comments people have been making about you in the press and on TV, most of us havent been paying too much attention?
You will be fairly anonomous somewhere you havent been before? That can only be a good thing?

Unfortunately at times you are more correct than you think.

Good manners are a part of a good parenting. So often we see school kids who won't stand on a Bus to give an elderly or disabled person a seat.

Manners are important and part of this is dressing appropriately at a restaurant. I have to agree with Col.

Tony, as you well know, I was referring to negative comments about the north, not me. Do try to keep up, it's so tiresome when people lag behind.

Rainlover - I know I am correct, I lived there (in Oz) for 3 years. Thank you for agreeing with me.

Col

Where in Oz were you.

I would guess Sydney.

Maybe you shouldn't have made negative comments without having been then?

We all make comments about things we have not experienced.

Col has made a comment based upon information he has received over a period of time and from various sources.

He is entitled to do so. It is called free speech.

At least I'm only pretending not to know whats going on! :-)

In that case you are doing a very good job.

Standards are definitely slipping. Can you blame the younger crowd? Look at the examples they recieve from the media? Snooki? Jersey Shore? Even British TV has set bad examples for today's youth. Skins?

The other thing I meant to say was that the waiter was foreign and had no idea. He tried to serve me red wine with the fish course! How gross is that?

I complained to the head waiter of course.

Col

What do you expect if you dress up to the nines and dine at a Truckers Cafe'

You are sure he wasn't norwegian. They always have red wine with cod there.
