I have not found a country where , having caught the waiters attention, writing in the air does not produce the required piece of paper, sign language is useful for us linguistically challenged .

That is funny. No you didn't upset me at all. In fact I kind of laugh went I sent it out. I meant it kind of like a joke. It take a lot to upset me. The reason I don't get upset easily is that I know who I am, the good and the bad, and nothing anybody can say will ever change that. I will acknoledge that I know I have a weird sense of humor. If you don't believe me ask my wife, on second though you better not ask her. I will tell you this tho, you have me fooled. I can't figure out if your the worlds best debate or the worst.

You don't know the joke you just made. My wife and I like to joke when we are asked what states we have been in. we tell people that we have eaten in Chinese Buffets in 33 different states.
Does your neck of the woods have some good Chinese Buffets?

I can’t speak on behalf of Col but I can understand where he is coming from.
American English differs greatly from real English. Especially when it comes to measurements (Imperial) and spelling. The American Date format makes no sense. How you came up with Month Day Year is beyond comprehension. Colour has a U in it. Z is pronounced ZED not ZEE. You don’t understand the letter S as you have replaced it with ZED. You even call a liquid gas. Petrol is not a gas it is a liquid.
The only thing I can put this down to is the lack of education of the early settlers.

I do tire of those who go on about the supposed corruption of the English language by the US.

The fact is the US split from the UK long before anysubstantial dictionaries had been written. Spelling in the UK was inconsistent and what was taken to the American colonies depended on who went. It was not until 1755 when Samuel Johnson compiled the first reasonably comprehensive dictionary of the languag in England.

Johnsons choices were somewhat arbitrary and at the time there was considerable debate over which spellingsshould prevail. Many wanted English to be a phonetic language. It is too bad they didn't win and we are stuck with the ridiculous concotion of English spelling.

Take the usual example, the UK "colour" versus US "color". The orignal word is from the Latin "color". The modern english version is influenced by the French variant "coleur". The relatively few people who could write at the time used various forms.

The American Webster published in 1802 and reflected the conventions that had prevailed after centuries of separation form UK English.

Take a look at original English writing from 1500. You will find it barely comprehensible The spelling, usage and even the meaning of words is quit different from modern English.

You could be right, but if I had to make a wild guess I think it was do to individualism. Each country (people) want to be different, especially countries
that have had a connection at one time or another. It's not restricted to ccountrie either. Certain group within countries have many differences in pronunciation of words, and meaning of words. 17 years old in the Navy I was laughed at when I ask for the bathroom. In the Navy it is called the "Head" I personally fine it quit interesting.

There's somethings I would die for, Somethings I will fiight for. Languages not one of them. I grew up in Woonsocket, RI, a French Canadian community. Some spoke so poorly and would not change. Ignorant. It took me years to be able to pronounce the "th" sound as in the. So there may be some truth in what you said, even if you said in jest. Secondly over the years I have found that if someone is grasping at something to put another person down all the time, it is usually an effort to bring themselves up, so I am not annoyed. That's not counting good naturate kidding, of course.

That is a good lesson to learn. One that I learnt a long time ago.
