So Obama got the prize - much to his surprise.

The nomonations had to be in by Feb 1st which meant he had been Prez for only 11 days apparently.

One has to ask why? What has he done except talk and promise to sent more troops to their death in Afghanistan. What did he do in 11 days to warrant this?

Perhaps our Yankee posters can answer this puzzle.

The word here in the UK is he got it because he isn't George Bush.

I believe your analysis is correct. It was a slap at President Bush.

I think most Americans are scratching their heads as much as you are about this.

He would have done himself more credit by politely declining citing "Mission as yet Unaccomplished"

When did Bush ever accomplish any mission, let alone a worthwhile one?

You've completely baffled me how you've mis-interpreted my post as you did.

No you haven't realised what Baraks mission was, that was to rid the American military machine of its warmongering philosophy, he's already done that although of course he'll have to keep rolling a few heads to ensure continued pressure on them, sadly of course he has to keep troops in Afghanistan to try and sort out Bush's mess there

Like Dan I do not understand Rich's response at post #5
What has it got to do with the thread's context.

The context of "mission accomplished" Bri or don't you remember the pics of Bush sailing in on a destroyer proudly displaying the aforementioned banner whilst countless thousands were still being butchered on the streets of Iraq?

I'll try explaining through you Bri. It seems that Rich is adamant in perceiving myself as an opponent regardless of what I post.

The meaning of my post was Obama shouldn't have accepted the nobel peace prize in order to distance himself from the "Mission Accomplished" fiasco caused by his predecessor.

Bush indeed claimed victory in Iraq with the "Mission Accomplished" banner. My suggestion to politely decline the peace prize in this context was to agree with the point that Colin made. It's a little early, just like GWB with Iraq, to start making such bold claims.

I read this as Mission Accomplished - bush out - thats warrants some special award - but not the noble peace prize ..

giving him the NPP simply deters him from doing his job just a little while longer so his "honeymoon is not over" just yet. How much longer will we wait for him to do something worth while I wonder?

The weirdest thing I've heard of since it was given to Mandella.

I agree with the general run of the topic.
President Obama has not yet accomplished anything. The awarders of the Prize have aimed it as a slight to Bush rather than as an award to Obama.

Obama should have declined it and said examine me again next year. I'll take it then if I have sorted out the Afgan/Iraq messes.

BTW, Obama has donated the $1.4M cash award to charity.

I think that is part of the reason. I think the other part was to recognize and reward the american people for electing the first not completely white person ever in our history.

I think it is pretty hilarious that americans, who LOVE to be number 1, actually seem to be pissed of that their president got an international award. Where is that winner's spirit now? Where is the patriotism?

Well I am going to successfully perfect cold fusion and make a perpetual motion machine in the next 4 years.

Do I get a Nobel prize for physics?

I don't see why not Fifty. Sounds like a couple of noble promises to me. :D

What was the alternative?

A 70 odd year old hasbeen who spent time in a POW camp, in other words a failed war veteran. It was obvious Obama was going to get it, even if the southerners would rather throw themselves off a cliff than see a negra (Spanish for black) in the white house.

America has done more in the last 6 years to promote war and make worse the terrorism threat. To that end, the current President is continuing that process and is even sending 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan in order to continue the death toll (mostly of Americans and British)

Maybe that's why he got it. The Americans kill most of the civilians so they create peace and quiet in some two-bit village near the Khyber Pass.

Well there is a language barrier here but I still can't see what merit there'd be in Obama even mentioning "mission accomplished"
