Deer Parts

The rule does not apply anymore, the words have been interchangable since the days of Samuel Johnson.

I was going to bring that one up myself as I remember seeing that spelling as a child.

Here's a question. When does one use "whilst" as opposed to "while"?
Is there a rule?

My biggest problem with getting picked up by aliens after a bar crawl is that it always seems that my friends get picked up by the busty blonde aliens who want to experiment. All I ever get is falling down drunk.

I have not done a bar crawl in years, though. Ever since about 1994, my dear wife has given me reason to stay sober.

I don't know if you're a friend of Bill's or not, 4/16/89

Here's a simplified answer from a British English forum
'Whilst' is an adverbial genitive. This means it is used to describe verbs.
For an example of where it's used, in English English at least, 'Whilst rising, the sun shone'.

Not used as 'Whilst the sun was rising, it shone'. 'While' would be used instead here.

Makes perfect sense.
Thank you!

I'm glad you understood it because I'm buggered if I can, e.g should it be
Whilst ripping some music last night I got slightly pi**ed
or
While I was ripping some music last night I got slightly pi**ed:confused::D

Whilst playing some music last night I got slightly intoxicated.

But you were replying to a lady.

To quote from others on the forum, our language is in a constant state of flux and one should modernise, I therefore took a leaf out of the new generation's book of manners and completely ignored sexual gender, after all these days if you stand up for a lady , say on a bus, you could get punched in the gob, it might after all be a gender change yob:eek::D

According to the rules, you seem to have used each perfectly.

Whilst ripping sounds classier though. :)

I'd love to stay and chat more, but unfortunately, I have to look for a hotel room for tonight.
Heat went out yesterday morning and it's too cold to stay here.
My nephew actually built a tiny snowman yesterday morning.... in FLORIDA!
20 miles north of me.

I've had a snowman living in the back garden next to me for the last 7days, unheard of in my part of the world for 25yrs:eek:

During the recent snow I have been using the bus. I stood up and gave my seat to a lady and she was very grateful that there are still some gentlemen about.

What's a bus?:D

How nice of you. I guess you let her sit beside the gentleman because he was not "your type".
