What are your favorite restaurants where you live? What makes them special?
(no insults to any poster allowed in this thread. Those will be removed if someone does personally attack anyone directly. This is intended to be a clean thread about food. There - you've been warned)

Unless everyone is given the right to delete others posts based their own rules for the thread I say somebody is way over the line. How about this: "If you disagree with me I'll remove your posts so don't do it. There, you've been warned! As admin/mod I have the power to do so, so live with it..."

I think the idea - of keeping threads clean and on subject is admirable - my only problem is why I can't delete some of the others posts that ruin my threads.

You're just to uptight and precious about you're threads. Did you ever look into some yoga classes as I suggested to help you unwind a little?

Why do yoga - when the little irritations of the world could be deleted. Why - would you be worried about the little irritations of the world being deleted? Ah - sorry.


Rich - everyone would delete on whatever basis, the user felt necessary - in time we would all know who was tolerant, worth chatting to or not, and could all make up our own minds. You could delete me every time!

As to starting my own forum - its like telling someone being hassled in a pub, they need to open their own pub, if they want decent rules.

Well, Larson deleted my post, even though it was not a direct attack on any member - I stuck to his dictatorial rules and still it got deleted - and it mentioned our excellent local chip shop.

I wonder if in conversation in a pub on a subject with Larson, if you should mention something off topic - what would he do then? Have a screaming paddy like some spoilt kid who can't have sweets in a shop?

I think the only way to not get banned is to bite-the-bullet and worship god Larson like everyone else.

What puzzles me though - is he a moderator or not? Or perhaps some super being with all powers. Why can't we delete posts we don't like? We just accept them as being part of the fun here on the forums, the watercooler rules are non-Access issues, that needs to be changed to non-Access issues as long as Larson agrees.

Not a good analogy. A better analogy would be a bartender that decided it was bad for business to let certain people bully other patrons and had those kicked out. If it so happens that the owner of the pub didn't agree with the bartender, the owner is perfectly within his right to dismiss the bartender. On the other hand, the owner and by implication, the bartender is perfectly within their right to exercise absolute ownership over the pub.

It's also known as "private property rights" and believe it or not, it tends to trump other considerations. Else, you'd have jerks coming in your flat at anytime of day or night uninvited and criticizing your choice of interior design.

So to be sure: the forum is privately owned, and thus is not subject to same consideration as may be the case for public grounds. Luckily, everyone is also free to go and find their own place that fits their preferences.

The restaurant thread illustrated to me the two camps here.

The contributors who want to converse with others and the detractors who want to talk about themselves.

I recommend this for the latter.

I thought this was meant to be a community or something so why not use that as an analogy. In most communities it is not the diktat of community leaders that decides the rules but rather the consensus of the community which is then implemented by the community leaders.

Sure, if the owner want this to be a community, it can be. However, there's not a consensus here. As dan-cat alluded to, I'm seeing two camps with different opinions of what should/can be discussed. I imagine if the split continues, the owner will have to make a tough decision to reconcile the split.

I'm sure in this specific case, such a consensus would not lead to such a one-sided result as some would imagine.

Plenty of people, yourself included, responded positively to that opening post with no complaint.
