Just my 2 cents worth. We are starting to get some spammers in here. I sure hope it does not spoil this site.

Some moderators apparently don't take their job seriously, therefore allowing all this trash to sit there.

A bit harsh Colin?

Moderators are volunteers who give their time freely. They can only be expected to do so much. From other threads it appears that some moderators have approached 'John' to get the rights required to put in place spome basic screening of posters etc which would reduce the spam count considerably. Unfortunately, as yet these permissions have not been sucessfully granted.

If you give volunteers a hard time for what they don't do, they may feel unapreciated and stop doing what they do do. We would all be the poorer for that.

I've contacted Jon again. As I've said before, I got promoted to Admin but an error in this task has resulted in me having less permissions than I previously had.

I didn't say "all" - I know Stu is doing an excellent job and takes it very seriously. There are others however who appear not to be so serious about it.

We all give our time freely to help others here.

Best I can tell it's SJ, Pat, Vas and me. Who among us do you feel is not doing their part?

Right. I've been talking with Jon today and he has fixed my account so that I'm now an Admin. I won't be taking on board suggestions since it's not my board and all that but it now means I'm able to take more of a stand against spammers on this board.

I've had a large number of domains that are responsible for much of the spam added to a blacklist so that should more try to register with these names, they won't be allowed. As this list of domains gets added to the volume of spam shall drop and we can all get back to being a happy little family. Okay?

What happened to Modest?

I see that Modest has the title of Moderator under his/her username, but I don't see any forums under which the name Modest is listed as a mod. I was wondering about that myself.

I'll look into it. Does modest still come here?

EDIT: He's not listed as a mod under the 'View Forum Leaders' page.

Hi Colin,

Firstly, I wasn't getting at you as such: as a rank amateur, I must say that you post frequently and seem to be pretty good to my inexperienced eyes (and (I think) to those more experienced with more experienced eyes than mine!).

I don't know the exact set up of a board like this but can imagine there are those that get rights as moderators and then succumb to life changes. They may want to be involved but simply do not have the time or whatever, yet occasionally manage to contribute.

Should you strip the low posting moderators of rights, they may feel slighted and take their skills elsewhere. I can see the frustration, but really, this isn't a 'job' and I still feel that everything given by moderators, whether frequent or infrequently active, should be appreciated for what it is, a voluntary public good to be apprecited for what it is rather than bitching about what it isn't.

BTW: Not attempting to start a war here, just trying to make moderators and other major contributors feel wanted.

Edit; Sorry Colin: Having re-read my post after hitting the submit button, I feel the 'Bitching' word was too strong and may be taken personnally by you. No offence intended.

SJ,

Good news.

Some of the craaaaap (I'm talking about the spam - :) ) being posted was getting to be offensive, even to an old porn lover such as myself (there are times and places etc).

Do you reccomend that we (I) keep using the red triangle to flag this turgid nonesense as soon as we see it or rely on yourself and others to spot and delete? If the red triangle simply 'spams' moderators then it may not be the way to go

I would continue to use the Red triangle. The spam is drying up as I spent a good portion of time at the weekend going through all the messages from recent weeks and banning the domains. As you may have noticed, we've had pretty much no trouble now. Not to say it will stop, but it should trickle in now and mods won't be swamped by notification emails.
