The disciplining of children has been removed not only from parents but teachers by the liberal knowalls, then they wonder why we have the problems we have.

Brian

Brian,

This I agree with you 100%, parents, teachers, are too afraid to discipline children these days in case they are perceived as some kind of monster, and for fear of legal retribution... and the children know it too, and that breeds many of their attitudes...

I have never been afraid to discipline my children, either in private or public, I am not talking about mass beatings or anything, but I have smacked their arms, or when they were toddlers smacked their bottoms when they did something wrong or something that was dangerous, but it was always explained to them after as to why they had received the punishment..

I believe that for some it is best if one parent stays at home and for others if both go to work, the issue of witnessing first steps etc is more for the parent than the child.
A stable united loving family is the most important factor in child/youth development.

Brian

Brian,

On this I disagree with you in part, I understand that given the pressures of modern living that in some cases both parents have no other options but to work, but that must be at the detriment to the child surely, if the child from birth is pushed between pillar and post from 7am, to 7pm, how can they have a stable loving family environment?

Yes there are good nurseries, and bad nurseries, but ultimately the minders that work in them are doing a job, they have no more love for the children they are minding simply because they are getting paid to do it..

The first's that I have described, steps, words...etc, I believe they are an important part of the bonding process between parent and child..

As I have mentioned before, I do believe that my children's growth and emotional well being was influenced positively by have my wife stay at home in the early years, and to be around for the majority of the day during the nursery, and school years.. That in my mind is a loving stable family relationship, but it is only my opinion...

To me, it is one of life's mysteries that the very people who exclaim - "Just laugh it off - you're too sensitive" are the same people who get all twisted up when somebody maligns their cousin's cousin, or even a sports team that they favor. Just wait until they themselves are poked.
In a thread where Col states that "it's all harmless fun", we read about lives destroyed and young suicides. Clearly this is not harmless. It's dead serious.
Let's face it folks - our reputation is important to us.
Those that claim: "I don't care what anybody thinks about me" are either lying, or they don't know themselves, or if they are actually truthful, then they are sociopathic types, not fit to live in close association with others. We do care what others think about us because we are not alone. We are social beings. That means, in part, that our good name is dear to us.
Bullying - and reputation bashing - happen in all cultures (I would expect), and are indeed serious problems - especially to the bullied.

Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls.
Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him,
And makes me poor indeed.
Othello Act 3, scene 3, 155–161

...but you only quote a portion of my post, would that not be an even more detailed example of "sound bites" ?

I thought that we were having a conversation, not issuing sound bites, all posts in the thread matter to get the complete picture.

This is becoming tiresome.

A sweeping generalisation Libre, we all care what some people think about us , but few if any care what everybody thinks about us, but I agree that those who dismiss bullying as harmless fun, or even insults as 'banter' are socially inept, probably bullies .

you imply that people cannot love children that are not their own, an incorrect statement.

Let me tell you a true story.
My daughter, the one with the boys, originally intended to become a teacher and as part of her University course she spent time at a school. The school was in a rougher part of Liverpool and we were later to learn that the teachers at the school were worried that the kids would break this quiet young lady, but when she finished her time there it was the children who were in tears, they wanted her to stay. Why? The headmistress's report said that it was because she gave them something that they had never had, unconditional love.

Many of the children had both parents at home, usually still in bed as the children got themselves out to school.

Nice story Brian, and that women clearly did have love for her children, but was that more because the children did not have the love at home that they craved and so a women showing them affection was quickly and eagerly latched on to..

Either way, that was an example of a caring person in charge of children...

In my experience with my two children, the different nurseries that we have sent them to, although adequate have never been fantastic, the wages these places pay are only suitable for young people, it is very difficult to find in a general nursery a more mature experienced person, as more often than not the wages cannot support that level...
There is a Government ratio of number of children to each minder, and in my opinion it is still too high, something like 6 children to each minder, and often these places are understaffed...

In your example about the stay at home parents in bed, I agree with you, that simply being at home does not make a good parent, but the love and support does if it is there... combine that with a stay at home parent, and you have an extremely happy safe, and loving environment, conducive to happy well balanced children..

It is sad, that modern society is so stressful and focused on material things, that both parents have to work to maintain a decent lifestyle... Blame Thatcher for this... she introduced Capitalism to this country in a mainstream way, and it all stems from her, that's when the breakdown in the society and the family unit values began...

It is a generalization, but I wouldn't describe it as "sweeping", because I believe it is largely true. If somebody mischaracterizes me, or unfairly attributes bad behavior to me, or dishonest dealings, or pretty much anything negative to my actions or words - and I think it is unjustified, I would try to set the record straight, and if possible, try to convince him that he's wrong about me.
It's true that it may be a waste of my time, with nothing to gain. Still, it would rankle me if I heard person A tell person B that I was a no-good SOB.
Even if I'm driving my car, in an orderly and legal fashion, and an anonymous driver gives me the horn or flips me the bird, or shouts an insult at me, when to my way of thinking that driver has all the wrong on his side and I've done nothing wrong - it rubs me the wrong way. Or a shopper at the check-out line in the store accuses me of cutting the line when I haven't - it would bother me. Not to move to another town or kill myself, but bothers me at least a little.
Multiply that feeling when a lot of the people you DO care about are saying nasty things about you - as in the case of cyber bullying.
So - I don't know when my sweeping generalization would be inapplicable.

Whoa! You are way off base here! What does capitalism have to do with why two parents work and not stay at home. Years ago when I became a old married man, we had nothing but what we could stuff in the trunk of an old car I had pulled from the local junk yard. We both worked and went back to school at the same time. Our children were put on the back burner until school was finished. When they (kids) came, we both were still working. We worked not to keep up with society but to get ahead. If there was no capitalism back then we would still have nothing. Of course now the liberals want social relief and look what we got. Socialism does not work and never has and never will. As Brian stated as a side order, there are children whose parents do not work at all but take those infamous welfare checks and stay at home. These children 80% of the time, will grow up trying to find a way to get on welfare instead of finding a job or going school for additional education. I see this everyday here in southern America and it seems to be getting worse each day. As a matter of record, today a survey showed that in the US there were more people on welfare than those that had a 'full' time job. In other words, socialism breaks up the family unit.

Have a nice day :>)

She didn't become a teacher? What a shame.

Scott my daughter's nursery was staffed/owned by two older middle aged Liverpool ladies, who have done it for years as their career and lives. They go on holidays , spend Christmas etc with some of the grown up kids they previously cared for.

They do have love for the children.

I quoted Capitalism, and Thatcher specifically because before she came along there was a good deal of community spirit in the UK, people didn't have much, but what they had was enough, along comes Thatcher and encourages everybody to get into Debt to buy their own home, and now it is difficult for a parent to stay at home and still keep their Home and their standard of living without getting into massive debt, and all the stress that it causes, which ultimately can devastate the family unit...

Hence my reference is completely valid...

For every one of those, there will be ten that are staffed by kids straight of the College courses, with only theoretical knowledge on how to care for a child...

You were lucky to find a good one.

Just remember that Community spirit goes out the window when socialism comes in. A poor man on the gov. dole will not help others but rather expect others to help him.

Is debt bad? Yes and NO. While I was in Europe years ago, I actually saved the money before I purchased anything. By the end of three years I had few trinkets I was able to take home with me. When I got home, we went into debt and purchased a home and a newer car. We worked to pay this debt off and did so some 15 years later. The home we went into debt all those years ago was ours and we used it as a stepping stone to get where we are now. Had it not been for capitalism those opportunities would not have been available. We still had community spirit in that when someone needed help, sick, etc. we all were there for them. If you will look, more people had a job in the UK under her (Thatcher)administration than they do now or did prior to her arrival. It actually took twenty years to turn things around, but it happened under Capitalism. From what I can read, the UK and most of Europe (especially Spain, France, etc) now are rapidly going down the path that leads to socialism. I am surprised that since UK was in the throes of socialism before Ms. Thatcher you would want to return to a ideology that does not work.

You have socialized medicine, YES? NO?.,Most of your people are on subsidies YES? NO?. Your unemployment stands at 11.9% or in some poles 14% Yes? NO?.
What about the subsidies for GREEN ENERGY. A Joke YES? NO?. As on and so forth. We here in the US have close to the same problem. A bunch of liberals have decided how everybody should live.

Capitalism works. It will make those rich richer, it will make those not rich, rich and it will bring up those from poverty and with nothing to prosperity. It actually narrows the gap between the rich and poor. Example: years ago in 1950's only the rich owned TVs. Now almost everyone has a TV and an even bigger crowd (including people in poverty) has a cell phone.

Not sure about your analogy between the rich and the poor, the gap has ever been widening, the Rich get richer whilst the Poor get poorer, simply saying that it isn't the case because everybody owns a TV or a Cell phone is ridiculous, people now own these things across all demographics because Mass Production that wasn't proficient in the 1950's has enabled this items to be retailed at relatively low costs when compared to the equivalent cost of the 1950's... that kinda blows your argument outta the water..

Gap between Executive Pay and the Average workers pay has never been bigger than it is now, ask the common man on the street who hasn't had an above inflation rise for the last 8 years and see what he thinks about it... where the average executive has gained more than 15% wage rises across the same period.. well above the inflation rate by about 7 times..

We have the largest amount of people ever having to resort to using Food Banks because their wages or their benefits cannot keep up with food inflation..

The only reason these Pay Day lendors such as Wonga are thriving is because the Poor people, benefits, and Low earners cannot make it through the month, if we did not have such a huge Rich Poor divide the Pay Day lenders would not exist..

That is society today, you can put your head in the sand and say that it doesn't exist, but it does...

That is what Capitalism is doing for this country, and that is why most parents have to both go out to work, and leave their kids for 12 hours a day from birth with nannies, strangers or minders, or if they are lucky with Grand Parents, that my friend is the breakdown of the family unit...

I do not know what the answer is, nothing seems to work, Socialism, Capitalism...

My Girlfriend is Polish, and her Family have said that Poland was better under Communism, than the society that they have now associated with the west, they had money, they had a job they had a purpose, unfortunately Communisim was also very restrictive with regards to freedom of speech, but hey, we have freedom of speech, and we have kids killing themselves over being Cyber Bullied, is it that good really...

My Girlfriend thinks the Ukrainians are mad for wanting to get closer ties to the west, she says it has wrecked Poland...

No, this is a thread for Cyber bullying and not capitalism vs socialism. While cyber bullying is a product of the internet, it is also tied to the family unit. It is apparent that we will not agree on the reason for the demise of the family unit and this thread is no place for a discussion of capitalism vs socialism. Maybe another thread.

Is this cos you are agueing capitalism is responsible for us all having gadgets like mobile phones etc.

Since this is the type of gadget which enables cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is one of the consequences of capitalism?

Or are the outlandish claims of capitalism only valid when they are
favourable?

;-)
