the other day, I gave a new meaning to the phrase "cruelty to animals". I was driving along a country road and smacked a deer. I hit it so hard that I saw it fly into the night, right out into the corn field. And I was only going 45 mph!

Front end of the car is totaled, and probably 5,000 dollars or more in damage. Door is almost jammed, and most of the front parts are completely missing. My first experience, just thought I would share. Anyone have an experience quite like this?

It is only "cruelty to animals" if you let the deer suffer unnecessarily. Out here the OPP will 'take care' of a suffering animal even though they are 'not supposed to', but waiting for an animal control officer takes more needless and pointless time. Smaller animals you need to dispatch with a rock or a tire iron. If you feel you havent the heart or just can not do it most rural towtruck drivers will take care of this for you.

Fortunately you were in a tall enough vehicle that the deer was flung away and did not come into the vehicle with you. That happens a lot.

Sadly a lot of animals get hit out in the country, most of the time it is an unfortunate happenchance. Other times it is idiotic people who do not frequent the area barrelling through in cars, trucks or on motorcycles fantasizing how they are in a TV ad or in their fave computer game. And the rest are just very stupid people picking their nose or yakking on cell phones.

Its quite common to have this sort of damage to a car- my neighbour just had her car written off - deer jump in front of the car comeing the other way it bounced onto her car - both cars write offs - here in the UK its Rutting season (I hope I spelt this correctly) - so the male deer have lost what little caution they had .. and will follow the does anywhere -

pointer if you see one deer crossing the road slow down theres bound to be another one behind it ....

your insurnace policy should cover this with no or little effect on your NCB - policy terms etc...

No Adam we use Spelt in this country, I thought it was spelled in the USA.

But I think Does should have had a capital , but hey only pedantics really care.

Where my mother in law lived (God rest her soul), one year there were dead deer on the side of the road every 1/4 mile. She and her sisters had little devices on their cars that made a high pitched squeal so the deer could hear it and get out of the way when they were coming.

The British also use spelled. I grew up with that word and didn't see spelt until I moved to Canada.

As an avid reader of all kinds of books I have seen "spelt" some. Just not in anything recent. A lot of older books have it though.

Well young children brought up using computers with US software will probably start spelling colour as color and maybe other American spelling will also creep in, the English being an outgoing intelligent race will cope.
I don't mind as long as we NEVER switch to the crazy US short date format.

I have probably said this already on some other thread, but I once got spelling marks off of a paper in English due to the fact that I had used the British spelling of pajamas, "pyjamas" as opposed to the "correct" spelling. (For my current location, I mean).

As far as the short date thing is concerned, I do wish that everyone would use the same format, and I don't care which format we use, it would be less confusing all around for me in my job in accounting as dates can be somewhat important.

from my english lessons(yes i did some - fell asleep through most of them)

You spelled that wrong
I spelt it correctly - so if its me the individual stating it its spelt - if I am refering to another its spelled
as" I spelled that correctly" - just doesn't sing right (I know its passed tense - but it's one of those funny ones..- mind you it changes every other year

Monies/ money's is another one to get everyone up in arms - I am minded for monies - however we have been informed by others its money's

always good for an arguement ..

(Look at me quoting bloody english when 50% of the time I get my own name wrong) -lol

I think it's really good that you're all discussing spelling and the correct way to use the English language.

It seems I may be having an effect here at last.

Col

p.s. Just watch the spelling of the word "feminine" Gary.

well you have seen my spelling before -- I thought I was doing pretty well with what I had done- knew I had spelt it incorrectly - but brain was engaged in another problem ..

Also, make sure to watch for missing commas. ;)

commas, semi colons - these are the bane of my life ----

- I let other punctuate formal docs etc - I do the brain storming - idea's done on paper -then let other review-

I can see someone elses mistakes - but not my own - so its good to let others review my presentations and I review theirs -
