Gun laws do they work

I think its quite sad you live in a society were not having a gun can be seen as a weakness or a vulnerability, compromising your safety.

Theres tiny enclaves of estates here in teh UK, like that - thankfully relatively few and far between, so its far far from the norm. These place were people feel the need to arm themsleves are sh**tholes and the people who arm themselves the dregs of society.

Sorry to hear thats the situation you find yourself in.

Cant you move somewhere decent?
 
As an immigrant to USA, let me write my thoughts on this subject.
USA has a gun culture starting with the settlers from Europe. USA became independent through a revolutionary war. India was a colony for centuries because Indians did not have guns; the British had guns. Great Britain was a colonial power with the help of guns. No one can dispute that.
Americans used guns for hunting. Many people told me that their fathers and grand fathers got their meat by hunting animals. So, I see a love affair with guns in this country. The industrial revolution improved the manufacturing of guns. In this respect, America has a different culture than other countries.

I see the city dwellers want gun controls because they see the gun related violence in the inner cities. The people living in suburbs and rural areas have more pro gun attitudes. I live in the suburbs. I even know that some friends carry concealed weapons (with permits).
In America, I have not seen a middle ground on this subject. Either they are for gun control or against it.
We will never see stats on how many crimes are prevented by guns, because a criminal may think the potential victim may have a gun and choose not to attack. That is why people do not boast, "I do not have a gun".
As for the folks who want more gun controls, they blame the guns, not the criminal. Then they work hard to save the criminal from getting the death penalty for their murder(s).
Do I have a gun? I will leave you guessing.

I see the middle ground as limiting the types of guns, like full autos are illegal in most everywhere I know.

I think the major element that causes gun control to be such an un-resolvable issue is the same one that causes gray areas in most other issues in the this country: trying to make one rule that pleases city folk thinking vs non-city folk thinking. :)

There's plenty of middle ground Jacob. The problem is that the NRA in America is incredibly powerful, and they do not believe in middle ground.

Someone wants a handgun for home protection. Okay, no problem. They follow the law, get the permit or whatever is required, all set. Do they need to own 7 handguns? Why not have a law that limits the number of handguns an individual can own? Surely there is a reasonable number that could be set as a limit.

The NRA lobbies and spends millions and millions of dollars to prevent any kind of limit, any kind of restriction to the type of guns that are out there.

And that's the way a special interest group should be. If they show the willingness to yield then the whole gun thing becomes an instrument of barter in the hands of a sleazy politicians in Washington (peace be upon him :)).

Besides, what does it really matter if a person owns 1 gun or 7 ?:confused:

If they're deranged, damage done either way...
 
Any ban on assault weapons will be interpreted as the beginning of ban on all guns. I believe Bill Clinton banned assault weapons (do not remember all the details), but George W. Bush let the ban expire. I can agree with assault weapons ban, but not sure it will reduce gun violence that much. When a Congresswoman was shot (and many others killed), the bleeding heart liberals were worried the criminal will get the death penalty. Now they are breathing easy that the shooter is spared of death penalty.
How about a minimum of 10 year jail term for any crime committed with a gun? Now you will see people coming out of the wood work opposing such a proposition. Our legal system surely favors the criminals (not the victims). And that is part of the problem.

I have guns but that does not mean I think there should not be a line drawn. I'm good banning full autos, assault, etc. I mean we surely don't want a bazooka (sp?) to be legal do we? :eek:

One think you are missing?? The NRA is people, People that don't want gun control. I know gun manufactory give big also, but they couldn’t give big if the people didn’t buy guns. I use to belong to the NRA. I don't any more, but might again if I see the left pushing too much to take away my gun. It is very simple, or at least it should be in a free society. If more people want gun control that is what we should have. If more people want less or no gun control at all that is what we should have. This also what the left is missing. Criminals don’t abide by gun laws, and if the left tries to take away my guns I guess I would then also become a criminal.
 
Yesterday at a wedding in Saudi Arabia guns were fired in celebration. Bullets hit an electricity transformer which caught fire. Several people died, all of them women and children who no doubt did not fire the guns.

Perhaps they should consider some gun control.

So you see there are gun controls in the USA. You can't go around firing guns in public. Would the NRA like that control removed too?

Gun control is all a matter of degree.

Good point! Does anybody know one way or the other if the NRA is against shooting guns in public. My guess would be no!!! Then again I think I remember wanting to shoot a gun at a wedding!!<G>

Lets get event more strict, lets pass a law that makes it illegal to kill another person - that will stop all killing! Yay!!!

Oh wait, we have that and yet killers seem to ignore the law. Maybe if we pass more laws... duh :banghead:
