Ken Higg hits 10,000 posts

I use to follow the number of 'signed on members' a while back but not much anymore. Do you get credits anytime anyone views a page or do they actually have to click an advert link?

Very kind words, thank you. But if I deserve any credit it is for identifying the need and fulfilling it. It is the Administrators and Moderators who run this place day to day and without them it would be nothing.

As a side note, I have noticed a large increase in the number of people visiting this board lately. Anyone else noticed that?

Can't say I've noticed numbers, I don't reallly take too much notice because I know we don't all always log in when we're looking for something.

I use it as an approximation of how the board is growing.

There certainly appear to be a lot of people viewing at the minute. And we do get new members regularly, every time you look at the latest member name it's changed! It could be to do with the format of this forum. I've taken a look at other forums and, to be honest, they just look too messy. I have enough mess in my mind trying to sort out code without trying to battle my way through a messy forum site for help. This one is easy to read and easy to use.

Oh, and the users are usually very consise in their answers to any technical questions.

Yes, I noticed several posts in the technical sections from first time posters.

So everyone is ok with banning people when they have a difference of opinion with a mod? One of the main reasons I think this forum has flourished is because the mods have for the most remained out of sight and out of mind.

Basically what this means is that mods are allowed more latitude in their opinions than everyone else. Would Col have been banned if he'd made similar remarks to anyone else? No. It is a sad day when a voice is silenced, most especially when it is one that speaks out in opposition to a person in authority. From here on out we'll have to carry the burden of wondering if what we're posting will offend someone in authority. A small slice of freedom is gone.

IMHO Bob should have apologized immediately if his original cooler comments were taken the wrong way and Col should have gotten something less dramatic - say a three day cooling off ban? Then if he kept badgering a mod after that maybe a permanent ban. Or better yet, bans should be submitted by a mod to the Vip group for a review / vote.

"bans should be submitted by a mod to the Vip group for a review / vote."

I totally agree with this comment, especially when dealing with someone who has more than 1,000 posts. For the sake of this community, I would like to keep those individuals on board where possible.

We all fall out from time to time, but as site owner I have to take a decision on these matters for the good of my site. So, from now on I would like to take Ken up on his suggestion of voting in the vip group for bans on people with 1,000 posts or more. Maybe in future you can reduce that minimum limit - I will leave that up to you.

Regarding Colin, I note he has made a substantial contribution to the forum. Therefore, I would like you vip's to vote on whether he should have his ban lifted. By having a collective vote, it will reduce the chance that personal differences will lead to banning unfairly. So, let the vip's decide.

Also, can someone here tell me specifically the reason for the ban? Like in one sentence.

Thank you.

there are a lot of other people helping out simply because they like helping out, and not for superficial recognition like post counts or reputation, the better.

Perhaps next time when you intend to post a complimentary remark you can re-read through it and make sure it could not be misconstrued as condescending :). Otherwise I'm afraid the mistake may be made again. :)

If this whole thread is going to be baggage for you please feel free to delete it - :)

Thanks again for moderating the forum - :)

:D too right.

help others without worrying about your 'web-rep' and so forth.

And who cares if someone posts in the watercooler??
chill out.

This is just my perception of what happened. I'll try to keep it short.

Col has a way up getting under your skin. In the case were I ask to be removed from mod'ing he was carrying his digs at me into other threads with one liners. I felt the best thing was for me to simply quit. In this case it seemed Bob's limit was simply passed when Col made his 'Who do you think you are' comment. I see nothing wrong with debating anyone, especially a mod as long as you keep it to a single thread.

Anyway, I think Cols ban was due to a build up of stuff over a long period of time and a tipping point was met...

I think it was because he came over as anti America, anti anywhere that's not Essex, racist, sexist and anything else that might wind people up, but reading between the lines I believe it was all just part of his perverse sense of humour.

Just to throw out my $.02-

1) Col's ban was because he attacked an admin/mod publicly and was already warned. He even indicated that 'this was twice in recent months', indicating that he knew where he stood but pushed anyway. Posting simply to express displeasure with any kind of administration and moderation is not an effective way to resolve things, IMO, and should be kept to PMs, and if uncomfortable with the admins/mods in question, involve another admin/mod.

2) I do feel that banning for anyone, regardless of their past contributions, should be determined by the owner/admins/mods, rather than putting up for a vote by a group. Furthermore, I am not sure exactly about Col's ban length, but I tend to think it appropriate for admin/mod to immediately 24-hour ban in event of disruptive posting, to give time to determine if this should extend into a perma-ban without leaving water boiling so long that pot go dry.

Maybe we should continue this in the 'It is sad' thread - ?

Col & Bob are stealing my lime-light :p

The idea of banning for a shorter period also appeals to me. They do this at the Overclockers forum. They banned me for an accidental breakage of site rules and I couldn't post for 5 days or so.

My suggestion for voting by the VIP members is to remove the possibility of personal grievances resulting in bans.

I was conflicted about whether I wanted to post that or not, but glad to echo Ken's sentiments.

So... Ken, congrats once again. Here's a lime. Hopefully it's sunny where you are so you can make a limelight. ;)

Thanks - Wonder if my boss knows he paid for about 9500 of those posts :p

I would welcome short bans which would allow some cooling off time and prevent these things from escalating.

Perhaps any bans for more than a certain period should require the agreement of several 'Mods' to prevent the suggestion personal vendettas.

I like the idea of handing it over to the VIPs. Maybe we should have a vote on whether to let them vote? This is just like being at work, we have meetings to discuss whether we should have a meeting to decide if we should have a meeting about the meeting we had last week..
:D

If he asks, tell him it's cheaper than sending you to multiple workshops & conferences.

But on other hand, you don't get to stay at a fancy hotel, eat fancy food and party hard.

Hmmm. Gonna rethink that one now. :D

(Can a mod please move the posts that has nothing to do with Ken's achievement to an appropriate thread for further consideration without distracting from the original intention?)

As a long time mate of Colin's through this forum I have to agree with ouma, Colin enjoys winding people up, especially those naive enough to swallow the bait or lacking a sense of humour, particularly those without an appreciation of irony. It's been obvious to most of us over here and a few over the pond too that the more you rise to the bait the more outrageous he'll become. As a friend I have posted on a few occasions when I felt he was pursuing a point (or victim) too far and can understand that feathers have been ruffled but where is the sense of proportion over this? It's time for a reality check.

Also to minimise Rich's long time contribution to the techie side of this board because he tends to give out one line answers in the first instance is disingenuous in the extreme. As a non expert Access user, sometimes it's nice to have the whole answer spelt out first response but if you want to learn, being pointed in the right direction is equally valid. Whenever I've gone back to Rich to put more "meat on the bones" of one of his answers he's always been readily obliging.

No-one here doubts Bob's willingness to give freely of his time and expertise but we are getting a whiff of hubris over these dealings which is sad for all of us.
