My point wasn't that people don't use the word to mean food, I know they do. The point was that a lot of people find it offensive. The fact that the people saying it don't know/care that they're being insulting doesn't alter anything.

EU regs might well have changed by now (I've been away for a while), but the official ruling on asylum seekers used to be that they were allowed to reach the first country in which they were no longer at risk and had to stay there. The BBC did a series of documentaries showing that this ruling was being interpreted in various ways by various countries. I remember some hidden camera shots of people being turfed out of beach huts in France by the French police and told to go to the UK, as they weren't wanted there.

Theres a clue in their name illegal immigrants - they don't tend to follow EU regs.

Fair enough, but I have noticed that the term 'illegal immigrant' tends to be used - by various people, including the gutter media - to refer to anyone in the UK who wasn't born there. This includes refugees, asylum seekers, people looking to scrounge from a 'soft touch' country, or whoever. I definitely take with a pinch of salt the figures quoted by some sources, as they seem tailor made to wind people up.

I was watching the US news and I have to admit I didn't fully get the idea behind that one. I understand it would be far simpler to make everyone legal than to have to track down and deport the illegals, plus it would create a huge number of people who would then be eligible to vote and very grateful to the party who let them, but were there any other arguments for it?

They were going on about how they enjoyed a chinky together or something like that (and perhaps enjoyed a fag afterwords?)... And from my perspective it was just getting a little personal for a public forum... excuse me - a WORLDWIDE forum
