Sen. Barack Obama - US first black president?

No you missed it - its the use of the term. irrespective of it being used either for a meal or a person .

I understand you mean food - but still ....

Gary, you're not going to win this one by talking sense.
Take another look at any of the various 'American is the root of all evil' debates and you'll realise you're onto a loser. I should have spotted earlier that I was being dragged in, but I must have been having an off day.

This is inevitably going to devolve into a succession of 'where did I say that?' remarks (complete with  icons), before they move onto the next 'up is down' or 'all bad things are caused by the US' wind-up.

Pity, but it's going the way of so many others.

Degrading Americans is just a way for them to get a feeling of importance (see def), in an otherwise depreciative society.

im·por·tance (ĭm-pôr'tns) Pronunciation Key

The quality or condition of being important; significance.
Personal status; standing.

While i don't mind having a go at you Yanks now and then (lol)--

the use of certain words are insulting "period" - whether the intention to be insulting is meant or not - going round say you should not take it that way is another way of saying that an insult has been recived and that the person saying it is not prepared to admit that they are wrong .
and that is not a finger pointing at Rich & Colin - but at all people who take this view - if you are upset by a phrase - but the person saying it doesn't mean it does this make you less upset .. no ..

Sorry If I over generalized a bit Gary, I didn't mean you. I should have said the 'incessant, mindless degrading of Americans by a couple of posters in the forum...etc'.

That way nice guys like you can still poke fun at us...:)

What the hell does attacking American global domination policies have to do with a discussion on racism, I do wish members would stay on topic......
Well now that America has been drawn into the debate has anyone else ever seen men of honour?

Didn't you feel the same way towards gays back along?

Would you care to refresh my memory and elaborate - ?

Despite what I posted in #218 I cannot think of how I would use ****** in other than a derogatory way, however I was unaware that "chinky", which I don't use, was other than a chinese meal until it was revealed on this forum so why would my use of it be insulting, who decides which certain words are insulting "period".

The other day I told a woman driver that she was a stupid woman, she told me that that was sexist and turned to my wife and said that she should be ashamed of me, to which wifey replied that "he (ie me) could hardly call her a stupid man". So is woman one of those certain words or is context all important and/or do people just look for racist/sexist innuendo?

- your example makes sense -
however if she was black would you of said you stupid ****** -and find this acceptable ?? its the use of certain key words that are insulting -
a woman is a woman so you stupid woman - is ok - (taking your live into your own hands mind you on this) as is you stupid man - however when you apply a racial overtone to it - it then becomes unacceptable ..

oops jus re-read your post - ignore the above

How about 'stupid American'... ? Isn't that kind of implied around here - ?

It's not 'deliberately' insulting. To be honest Bri, I'm a little surprised you're not aware of where the term comes from. Would the term 'chinky' really have come into it's current use without the term 'chink'?

Well Bri, I really am surprised at your confusion on this one. A well known couple on these boards have a childish knack of using a noun as a pejorative.

Take for example

'Really, taking a lesson in racism from American is akin to taking a lesson on world peace from Bush'

It's quite easy to interpret your statement as using 'woman' as a derogatory term if you see it in this context. I'm not saying this was meant by you, just that perhaps your woman driver had heard this statement with that 'edge' several times before.

Then by your example we should keep our mouths shut and not say a bloody word, I wonder why this came from the other side of the world:rolleyes:

you could of said daft black woman and been correct -
if a she was a woman, black and daft.

you were stating a fact however if you say daft .n... woman - then it has an racial overtone -

same with Chinky - you can say daft chinese woman - you wouldn't its too much of a mouth full and shorten to daft woman - thats ok no racial overtones - and you are stating a fact or an educated opion (about the daft bit) .

there is implied an insult as to the intellegence - which is neutral - could be applied to all and any one - the second part is personalising this to a person - woman - so although possibly rude not insulting in a racial/social way

Black Bastard, Fat Bastard, Ginger Bastard, French Bastard, Big nosed bastard, Big Eared Bastard.

These my all be true - but there is a maybe a certain negativity attached to the physical description before the bastard, so I don't know about black bastard.

One new years eve many years ago - whilst at a taxi rank waiting endlessly to get home from town - in a queue with several hundred others - and not many taxis around at all - I heard my mate should at the top of his voice quite angrily - You f***ing black bastards!!! I was a little surprised to say the least as were the group of black men infront of us. My mate was actually shouting at two black cabs who either didn't stop at the rank. So on this occasion at least there was no racial motive behind the words.

Could have caused all kinds of trouble though - and I wouldn't recommend it.

and yet the one who feels gagged has the highest post count

You miss the point again:rolleyes:
I refuse to be gagged by you, the government, uncle Tom Cobley and all. I know how I FEEL and have no reason to be ashamed of it!
