bean straw - Another good name for a band...

:):)

Isn't it odd that Mike can use phrases like 'coons', and foul language without any American protest - yet Rich and I use the word 'chinky' to describe a meal and we're made out to be the devils incarnate.

Not sure about everyone, but this is a "coon" to me

And of course from Wikipedia:

chinky (alternatively known as a chinky chonky[1]) is a slang term for Chinese takeaway restaurant, or the meal that one buys from such a restaurant. The name "chinky" is the adjectival form of chink, and like chink is an ethnic slur for Chinese people.[2] It is also seen as a racist term towards people of Chinese/Asian origin.

From the same source ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coon
"an ethnic slur used in American, Australian and British English for people of African or aboriginal Australian descent"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_slur
"Coon
(AUS, U.S. and U.K) a black person. Possibly from Portuguese barraco, a building constructed to hold slaves for sale (1837). "

I have not responded in objection to Mike's poor use of words but then I have not done so for Rich and Col for different reasons. I don't know any of you gentlemen (I am probably using the term loosely for one) but it seems to me that Rich and Col are just out to get people's dander up and cause a stir. I doubt that either would intentionally offend a person of Chinese descent and if asked by such person to stop using the word would do so with an apology. I hope that I am correct.

On the other hand I find Mikes language and attitude uneducated and very offensive and until now had chosen to ignore rather than fan the fire. I don't know any Aussie's personnaly only remotely from reading posts on this site and believe that Mike is a minority in his racism.

I'm glad you like America Mike, but please clean up your act. As the old saying goes "With friends like you, who needs enemy's!".

That was certainly a refreshingly polite post - :)

If you notice however, I never said it was NOT ever used in a derogatory sense, I said this is what it means to ME.

Anyone I have heard using it in many, many years refers to this version from your link.
an abbreviation for raccoon

How ever if you look up "Chinky", there is only one paragraph on it, not separate
definitions. maybe a minor point, but something worth considering.

Okay, Sorry.

I didn't mean to spoil your fun. Please continue bickering.:D

Anyone not from down under, you mean:D
Wasn't implying for amminute that you used it that way, yourself. Applogies if that was how it came across.

This nonsense has gone on too long, does anybody care what you use amongst your own clan, its what you use in others' company if they politely ask you not to, and that applies to the forum, all we ask is for simple courtesy and sensitivity to others' feelings.

Funny that but the how innocuous term "chinky brought such howls of protest etc. from those who now say "if that's how you use the term coon" then fine:rolleyes:

I agree with you Rich, I don't and wouldn't use the term chinky but this thread has certainly shown a bias agaainst certain members.

Oh dear, if you really can't see the difference then I'll have to explain it.

'Coon' is short for 'raccoon' and in FoFa's context refers to a little furry creature.

'Chinky' is short for 'chink' and in Rich's context refers to a restaurant that serves Chinese food.

You do the math.

So if you were amongst a group of black people you would happily say, " we had some coons round are way last night"

It isn't in Mike375's posting - coon means a black, ******, ****** or whatever you want to call it.

Hasn't the USA got a folk song called 'Old Zip Coon'? - we learnt it at school, we were told it was a song blacks used to sing whilst building the railways as slaves across the wild west.

And this was the whole point of my saying that there is bias on the thread, Mike did not receive universal condemnation as Rich and Col did. I know that they can be a pain in the neck but they actually use Chinky in a favourable way, I may not use the term but they like Chinese take aways and food so it is not being used as a racist slur, thus I can only draw the conclusion that the critics are merely using it as ammunition to attack Col and Rich rather than having any deep seated aborrence to racist language.

Pardon me, I did say he crossed the line. ;)

I'm guessing that when Col and Rich decide to reduce the number of their hate posts to a more modest level they will become less of target themselves - ;)
