Why so Anti America on this forum?

I suspect that the majority of British people admire and even like the Chinese immigrants, and especially like Chinese restaurants and takeaways, thus their use of chinky is not a slur but just a short hand, and the much quoted wiki does not suggest that that use of it is in anyway demeaning.

I suspect that if the British public so admired their Chinese immigrants when they first arrived then the word 'chinky' would never have come into common use considering it derives from the term 'chink'. Still what would I know, I'm just a biased American right?

Your perceived bias against Rich and Col is not imagined. It stems from them telling me and my fellow compatriots that we are morons.

I guarantee you will not find that word used by me against Americans.

Although, Americans have said I am a Nazi, a member of Hitlers youth and a horses ass and my comments are worthless - oh and I'm racist.

Who here does the name calling?

Please do not say I use particular words when I do not.

Col

If someone used the word chinky here it would be frowned upon.

I'm sure Cindy said she was fed up with the watercooler and wasn't going to post here again - just an American statement I suppose, no real substance to it.

Nice to see you Cin;) nothings changed (just to save you from reading thousands of posts.)

The Yanks are still being resistant to education in worldly ways. But we still keep trying.

Har har har. I did take a break for a while but maybe you didn't miss me. :(

Thanks. Yes, I can pretty much skim the surface and see the same old tired arguments, mostly from your side, of course. ;)

Education, huh? Is that what you call it? :D

It's very simple. Its a case of what you are referring to. Fofa was referring to a creature, period. Rich refers to a building that MUST be linked to the Chinese in some way

What arrogance, you assume that only the Chinese can supply or serve Chinese food:rolleyes:

The most popular chinese takeaway food round here is infact not from a Chinese owned establishment, but Chris's on Rose Lane.

Dan you miss the whole point of the argument about bias. Coon was first used in the thread by Mike to describe black people, and FoFa rather than join the condemnation tried to sidetrack the issue with his furry creature, why? One can only assume that it was because Mike has stated that he liked Americans. Well I like Americans but would still expect to be attacked if I used foul and abusive language.

I did not say Americans were biased, I said that bias was shown against Rich and Col, I do wish people would read what is written.

So we have to judge everything by the standards and workings etc of centuries ago, the rest of the world moves on even if America doesn't.

Yes and I've cooked Chinese food too, vinegar and golden syrup with a few other ingredients makes a great sweet and sour sauce;)

Golden syrup... thats the stuff in a tin with the flies buzzing around a dead lion , right?

Tasty!:D

Yikes! :D

Whatever would make them choose that for a logo, I wonder?

They aren't flies, they're bees.
From the company's website(http://www.lylesgoldensyrup.com/LylesGoldenSyrup/PastPresent/default.htm):
Abram Lyle had strong religious beliefs, which is why the Lyle's Golden Syrup trademark depicts a quotation from the Bible. In the Old Testament (Book of Judges 14:14) Samson was travelling to the land of the Philistines in search of a wife. During the journey he killed a lion, and on his return past the same spot he noticed that a swarm of bees had formed a comb of honey in the carcass. Samson later turned this into a riddle: "Out of the eater came forth meat and out of the strong came forth sweetness".

The "lion and bees" were quickly becoming identified with Lyle's Golden Syrup, and it was registered as Lyle's trademark in 1904. Plaistow employees did not forget to celebrate its 100th birthday in 2004.

However, no-one knows why Abram chose the wording 'Out of the strong came forth sweetness'. Was he referring to the tin holding the syrup - or the company producing it?

So, if you've moved on, why is that word still in common use?

Unlike Latin English is not a dead language, and thus not only can it develop new words and spellings but adapt new meanings to words, especially when taken in context.

Just incase you have not read the whole thread i must point out that I have said that I don't use the word chinky, and if I did I would not use it where it is objected to, on the forum for example. My argument is to do with the biased treatment of Rich and Col, whom I've stated can be a pain, and Mike 375, aided and abetted by FoFa and Dan-Cat.

I know you don't use that word Brian, and I appreciate everything you've said. I just find it incredulous that some people can't possibly understand why someone else might find that term objectionable. Therefore, the argument about the furry animal to me was valid, because just as Rich and Col say they never use that term as a derogatory but only to refer to a meal, FoFa and myself never use the word coon as a derogatory but only in reference to a small furry creature. It means something else entirely to you over there though. As far as the biased treatment of Col and Rich goes, they've brought a lot of that treatment upon themselves because of their biased treatment of others (namely Americans). :D

If they would shape up and start treating people nicely again, then I'm sure they would get the same in return. :)
