I suspect that the majority of British people admire and even like the Chinese immigrants, and especially like Chinese restaurants and takeaways, thus their use of chinky is not a slur but just a short hand, and the much quoted wiki does not suggest that that use of it is in anyway demeaning.
I suspect that if the British public so admired their Chinese immigrants when they first arrived then the word 'chinky' would never have come into common use considering it derives from the term 'chink'. Still what would I know, I'm just a biased American right?
