But St.Bob took umbrage at this method and thus remember that this thread is paying homage to the aforementioned;)

That is for you to find.

But do you see how God works his ways, even at the most simple level.

A new poster will see this thread, read the first few postings and then jump to the end:D All of us who have an "interest" have had our say but God somehow managed to make the end different. For fucks sake, Bob could now post on this thread.

The evidence is there....why avoid the evidence...
Just to give you a little hint:) You won't find your "God helps those who help themselves in the bible". You should know that but then you seem not to know a lot of things you ought to know.

I bet there's something a bit like it in Proverbs, somewhere.

You should know that but then you seem not to know a lot of things you ought to know.
He's full of surprises - I keep thinking he's a creationist/fundamentalist Christian, based on some of his arguments, but he says he isn't...

Benjamin Franklin is credited with popularising the saying "God helps those who help themselves". You won't find it in the bible, but by all means, go look, I'd be interested to hear which chapter and verse.

Proverbs tends to teach the complete opposite, in that it asks that we look after one another.

There is a bit in Exodus about helping yourself. "Thou shalt not Steal" not quite what he was saying but near enough:D

I suspect thats because he enjoys stirring things up. In the "Are you an Atheist" thread he voted as an Agnostic and then said he thought there was a supernatural behind the Big Bang. As Alc said in another thread he is quite capable of arguing that when he said White he really meant Black. Could cause some confusion on pedestrian crossings:D

I wouldn't play chess with him then :p

Can you show me the part of the Bible where it is missing:)

I have not changed my position of agnostic. I have said several times I sway from side to the other. Pefectly natural for an agnostic.

However, in more recent times (which would be in the time frame of these current threads) I am seeing things clearer. It would appear that God in the Bible is true as is Jesus but I think of limited power and local branch managers.

Amazing how many threads are turning into discussions on belief/religion/God and similar topics.

It was an observation not a finger pointing exercise, and as you are a witch I will forgive you, just in case. :D

It does have the advantage that the same posts can be recycled several times. Very ecologically friendly:D

and Mike wins the prize?

Brian

I'm sure he does, I'm quite sure the diety he calls the great prick in the sky will sort him out with something special :D

Don't worry Brian, I won't be flying past your place casting spells tonight - it's Beltane, I'll be dancing around fires setting my brain cells free from the confines of sobriety :p

There seems to be an internal contradiction here. If you think the God in the Bible is true then you are no longer an agnostic. However the God of the Bible makes it clear He is the only God with unlimited power and certainly not a local branch manager.

But what about all the hot air being expelled into the atmosphere, think of the carbon footprint:cool:

There are actually a couple of different ways to interpret "God helps those who help themselves" - most straightforwardly, it could mean "God will ensure that self-reliant people prosper", but it could also be read with 'help themselves' meaning 'promptly and selfishly grabbing their share or more'.

For the former interpretation, the closest I could find were proverbs extolling the virtue of hard work, for example: Proverbs 10:4 -
Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.
