Am I the only one who wonders why we continue to purchase products made in China?

I particularly like the reason for the melamine in the milk: "to deceive quality tests for protein". How clever of them! And how stupid of the consumers in the west to keep buying this crap. We should all be down at the store protesting their poorly made Chinese garbage.

I've had 3 or 4 Chinese guitars and they are of excellent quality. In fact, the Burns Cobra is more of a 60's Strat than a 60's Strat.

Who cares if children in a sweat shop make them, they are a good price and are good value.

I'm all for good value stuff, I don't give a toss where it comes from.

I guess I need to give a hint to the contents of the linked page. Seems Chinese manufacturers have tainted Cadbury's chocolate with rat poison. Just like they've done with baby formula and dog food. They purposefully put the poison in the baby formula to trick the quality tests into thinking there was enough protein in the drink.

This is in addition to all the childrens toys over the last year that have gone to the west with lead and loose parts.

I am with you George! .... Its scary to think of how easy this event transpired ... just like the Lead in toys ... And despite my Republican view of politics, I am amazed at the ability of Administrations (apparently event Democratic ones) to keep China as a preffered nation for trading an such! ...

I just shake my head is dis-belief! ... As I drink my coke from a mug, made in China .. of course ...

... Ever tried to find a product NOT made in China at Walmart? ... its fairly difficult! ...

Funny thing about that is that Walmart built its reputation by using the "Made in America" slogan.

I personally don't mind buying products from anywhere, if they're good products. I have no political agenda in this. But we are getting tons of reports that products from China kill people and animals (only 2 examples cited). And it's wierd to me that nobody really seems to care.

Cos its cheap ...
which is a shame ..I would not mind spending a little bit more for a better quality

-following on from Richs post i bought an acoustic guitar Simon and Patrick - well made really pleasant sound -mellow -

i could of bought a cheaper one - but in the long run woul dof lost out - I paid 50% more for this one and have been offer a hell of a lot more for it now -

we bought a fridge freezer the other day - because the old one broke - the cost to repair it was more expenseive than to replace it and yes you guess it most of the parts made in China

I do think its the thing itself - if you are looking for a cheap mug then buy Chinnnese - if you want a posher mug buy a dutch mug or english mug

It is all based on greed and raising profits by getting a premium price for lousy quality... China might be exporting crap but it is the importer who is purchasing and redistributing the crap... if there is a market for it someone will produce it.

Do not make the mistake of "Made in America" or "Product of America" meaning the item is made in America. These days it means Final Assembly in America, so some domestic sweatshop is paying minimum wage for people to put together foreign manufactured products.

Funny thing about that is that Walmart built its reputation by using the "Made in America" slogan.

If we went by the assumption that the market would take care of this, I would think it would start with the consumer raising hell with the distributor or importer. That is not happening.

For instance, people on these forums would rather discuss just about anything other than this topic. If the market worked correctly, we would all be marching in front of our local WalMart stores with picket signs.

Given recent state buy-outs, it makes you wonder which is the capitalist country and which is the socialist country between the USA and China.

Man, you hit that one right on the head. That's why there's so much investment in China among the investors in the know.

Investors in the know... they know but do not care that the Chinese workers will work for barely enough money to survive in a country where companies will do anything to save money... even tainting food products and infant formula... just make more money no matter what the cost

Assuming the government will do nothing about this (seems to be a good assumption at this point), shouldn't the people be complaining to the retailers, distributors, importers, and manufacturers? Or is the assumption that "it's not my problem" the way we handle these things?

Right on George!! You are not the only one to notice, or care. I'm with you on this. Unfortunatly there is not much we can do, nothing much is made in America any more. And the little that is made here is manufactured mostly by illegal unskilled labor, and its crap. Both political parties sold us out over the past 15 years.

I don't care much where it's made. However, when a country has as poor a record of manufacturing things that are poison/dangerous, we should stop buying their products. And since the majority of the American population is clueless and will buy their products anyway (if they're made available), those few of us who actually see what is going on should be educating the masses and the retailers.

Why? America sells tap water in the Dansani bottles, they tried it on us but we had a big expose on it so Coca-Cola pulled out of the UK market. I'm sure none of us manufacturing countries are squeaky clean.

If you choose the Chinese goods carefully, they can be very good (as I said earlier) - just ignore the cheap useless tat they send over.

It's mainly the ones that are made for American companies that are at fault:rolleyes:

Who would buy anything you put into your mouth from Walmart? God knows whats in it or where it was made. There's a reason it's cheap.

I have never and will never buy any food or drink from this company. In the same way I wouldn't buy a dish or a mug there. Who knows what's in the glazing.

About the only thing I buy at Walmart are CDs and DVDs.
