You know over 40 years ago I had the privilege to see one of Bob Hope's USO, shows. And it was one of those things that made everything worth being and doing what it was. Not only that, when I got back home and at the family gatherings I had something in comment with my older uncles, who had served in WW2! At this time of year and with all the uncertainly, I wish we still had an ICON, such as Bob Hope, to maintain the continuity, and make fun of our leaders, yet make you feel that your decision to put yourself in harms way was the right way to be!Before Bob, was Will Rogers, who at the time was the heartbeat of mid-America. Where is Bob or Will who can speak to this generation and make them proud to be an American? And make them laugh at the sacrifice they deliver doing in what they believe in? We need someone to make fun of us, while we bleed and do! Gosh I do miss Bob Hope.

Bob Hope was born in England.
Just thought I'd beat Col to the punch.

During the 50's and 60's most of the entertainers Hope took with him on his annual Christmas trek had served with the US Military during WW2 and truly appreciated the USO shows that they had seen during that conflict. As a result, they were honoured when Hope asked for their assistance and were proud to go.
When the American public turned on the military during Vietnam, those who continued to appear in the show (especially Hope himself) were seen as warmongers. The annual Christmas show took on a very negative overtone.
I think a lot of these feelings linger in addition to the selfish nature of a lot of today's entertainers. They could make a lot of money playing Vegas over Christmas for example.

Gary Sinse has done an admirable job in recent years with support and his Lt. Dan Band. Robin Williams who disagrees with the war but supports the troop has appeared also. Toby Keith I think is his name also has done a lot

Toby puts on a great show and he's not from England.

I think that first people need to take personal inventory and prioritize what is truely right and morally correct for themselves before they can embrace something as deep as the values people held near and dear back in the days. Unfortunately with money driving the moral fabric of society the values are placed in credit and debit rather than in faith and hope. Perhaps society will need to reach bottom before it can change its direction.

In the mean time, here is the ICON which is taking over all that there needs to be believed in $

Yes, good old Bob - one of the best English comedians, along with Chaplin.

Col

Don't forget Archie Leach. Another comedian escaping a dreary little island in the almost North Atlantic; for the sunshine of Southern California.

But of course America takes in all kinds, and gives them the opportunity to thrive.

Actually, Hope was a song and dance man when he arrived in the US. It wasn't until later that he discovered his real gift was in comedy.

Not a comedian - more a comedy / actor I'd say. He was born in my home town.

If their colour and religion is acceptable.

That's funny Col, when was the last time a black person was elected to head your little country.

Why must we have a black Prime Minister? Just because the Yanks voted one in as Prez?

What choice was there with you - an old man with a self confessed killer as a VP or a younger vibrant good orator who has some charisma about him.

Why not start with a black PM. If he works out then we can try a black King. :D

USA already had a black King. As in Martin Luther ...

Some people didn't like his message. Sad no matter how you cut it. While I support my country, there are people within it who deserve a serious lashing (a la' HMS Bounty style) for their gross stupidity.

But I digress...

I noted the reference to Archie Leach. Alexander Archibald Leach was a nice actor, too. Shame his name was oddball enough to not be considered marketable in the USA. Cary Grant turned out to do well enough for himself, though. From the references available to me, I would say he came to the USA in 1920. He also made a few films as Cary Lockwood before the final iteration to CG.

Only Col could drag a thread about Bob Hope into hate rant...

Well, Well , Well, Col,
You have already put your smelly foot, right in it (your mouth that is).

You said that America is not a place of opportunity for people of color, or of the "wrong" religion, I give you an example and you brush it off.

Sir,
You will need to do much better than that in the future.

Col was spot on,

Barak was the 'Wrong Colour' at the 'Right Time'.

Anyways back to the subject matter.

In the UK we send Glamour Models rather than comedians out to entertain the troops.

I know which one I'd rather have sitting on my lap....

Barak was the 'Wrong Colour' at the 'Right Time'.

Come on Scott, at least spell his name correctly: 'Barack' (or Mr. Obama to use white boys in the south :p)

And the main reason he was elected is because of the horribly bad job of his predecessor...;)

And Col is a bit apathetic when it comes to people of color as he refers to them as having a 'hint of the tar brush' (or something like that)...
