I keep forgetting to add a smiley face to indicate an attempt at humour.

Since many people outside of the UK have no idea we refer to the London subway system as 'the underground', I was referring to the actual area of the earth below ground level. The impication being that until that was invented people/animals only had the surface to use.

hehe i just thought id name drop Tea but yer the chinese are the cultivators... however Powered Flight is what i was talking about none of that gliding rubbish, planes that use mechanical locomotion.
By time i really meant the creation of an accurate mechanical time keeping device. Time goes back through history with sun dials, water clocks and other such malark.

Yer i knew about the pnueumatic tyre.. i could have also mentioned: The Lawnmower, Worcester Sauce, Vacum Cleaner, Road Cats Eyes, Hovercraft, The Pub, Marmite, DNA, The Underground, Public Parks, Tin Cans, Sparkling Wine... to name but a few
DNA wasn't invented - it evolved many millions of years ago. True the structure was discovered quite recently at Cambridge but that is not the same thing as inventing it.

Yes, the chronometer which you've already mentioned in your list.

I suppose as a result we'll have to give the Brits kudos for the calculation of longitude as well  :p

I wonder how many inventions are discoveries, and how many are developments of ideas, perhaps we say somebody invented something when in fact he was around to implement sombody else's ideas when technology/engineering made it possible. Didn't Leonardo or some other ancient draw pictures of flying machines.

I think some geyser called Reynard or similar programmed his textile machines to weave patterns using paper tape with punched holes in the 19th century, the first programmable computer? I may be wrong of course it is half a century since i did history. :D

Although the British, don't you just hate the word Brits it sounds demeaning, may not have discovered America, but then neither did Colombus, however we did invent the American nation by forcing the colonies to grow up and look after themselves, thus we have a claim to all discoveries and inventions there from.

Yanks is only demeaning to you Southern boys, and I don't normally use it except to deliberately wind up insult etc during a slanging match.

ergo DNA was an invention. People think inventionism (yes i just invented that word...) is a process like building stuff out of lego, where infact it covers an array of things such as discovery etc...

and im pleased Wayne picked up on my Mini Skirt insert ;) indeed it is a rather good creation.

as for brian's comment on who invented who you're completely right we should really refer to a majority of these people as pioneers ... but then again there is a fine line in this whole argument.

On another note im enjoying how this discussion has completely changed direction from the presidential candidates. :)

Better than not being allowed in at all:p

Speaking of being allowed somewhere... I think the issue with Mexicans in the US is simply a technical issue:

a. If they want to come here and work because we're to lazy then let 'em in.
b. The problem is that there is too much red tape with crossing the border and then going back across when they want to go home. Logistics really.
c. Speed the process by tattooing a barcode on them so the can 'scan' themselves in and out like at wal-mart or embed a rfid chip under the skin. Then they won't avoid the clogged borders gates.

???

I find it interesting how the KKK said they will kill Obama if he becomes president. I think it would be good for the country if that happened as the ingrained racism in American society will come to the surface and maybe they will be able to deal with the problem rather than having this deep set anti socialism running through the country. Although i can see no real solution with social / class / race seperatism within american society.

I don't think Obama would agree it would be a good thing...
